Newbie-Too Question?

Post by LarryP »

I'm taking the plunge into this addictive, crack like wargame I keep reading about. However, I have questions but will ask just one for now. After creating TF's, they add up fast. Since TF's can only be programmed to do one set of operations, how do you keep track of reassigning them once they get to their destination? Lots of handwritten notes? For instance, I want to send a TF to an island to pick up supplies and then deliver them to a different destination. Do you just keep notes on all of these TF's and watch for when they arrive, then assign them to the 2nd destination? It would sure be cool if I could program a TF to do a two destination task.

Hi Larry.

More sophisticated command would be cool...but then more ways for your "cyber captains" to do the wrong thing, or react the wrong way to an attack.

To answer your question, yes, manual notes are the only way to really do it. The good thing about playing a game everday for months is that you just start to remember where your TFs are headed. I can now pick up a game and remember what everyone of my 100 TFs is doing. Also, you learn systems to streamline your logistics.

I have heard a suggestion that the developers include a memo field on the TF screen. That's all fine and good (might really be helpful), until you forget to clear it and send the TF off on other missions, then you end up with notes that are weeks old.

It would be nice to have a Staff Notes on button at the top.  Right now I Alt-Tab out and use notepad.

Play it in windowed mode. The resolution will be sharper, and you'll never have to Alt-Tab again; don't why I ever bothered with full-screen...

I use ms excel to track EVERYTHING. I access excel either from and adjacent computer or while running witp in a window.

I have found the use of Taxi's (large convoys) to be helpful. I setup hubs and move supplies/troops via taxi between hubs. Then when they arrive at the hub in their destination theatre, I move them individually. I have a tab on my spreadsheet for each hub.

Taxi's are usually composed of 20 AK's and a couple escorts.

Wow, I don't use Excel but my wife did before she retired. That's keeping track quite well! Anything like that has to be more organized than hand written notes. Rockmedic109 uses Notepad so that's more what I can do, or my editor Atlantis which replaces MS Word. However, windowed mode sounds the best since notes are a must.

Thanks to all of you for great input. I appreciate all of your help. Don't let me stop you... [;)]

Here is a trick I use. Set the TF's final destination as its homeport. Next set the TF to Do Not Retire. Send it on to the place you are picking up supplies or troops. Every turn check all your ports and see what TFs are in them. If you see a TF you don't remember, check out its homeport and that should jog your memory.

That sounds logical to me. I will try that. Thanks!

My wife (Excel expert) and I are still trying to figure out how ericl uses MS Excel to track everything?! TF# and destination coordinates?!
