Bios for scenarios

Call for Volunteers! This sub-forum is devoted to our ongoing project of researching and
writing brief biographical sketches of all 1000 Civil War generals, each
of whom has a chance of appearing when one plays "Forge of Freedom."
Players are invited to participate in providing info for these bios, which will be added to the game by means of patches, as they are
written.

Bios for scenarios

Post by Gil R. »

The following generals appear as 18-percenters, 25-percenters or 100-percenters in the July and/or November scenarios, so it would be really good to get their bios and historical ratings in time for the next patch. Do any of these interest any of you? (Note that the first four are 100-percenters in at least one of those scenarios. David Hunter would be in there, too, but has already been assigned.)

N. Banks
Tyler,_D.
N.G. Evans
Heintzelman,_S.P.
Patterson,_R.

Porter,_A.
Richardson,_I.B.
Franklin,_W.B.
Davies,_H.E.
Schenck,_R.C.
Howard,_O.O.
Keyes,_E.D.
Holmes,_T.H.
Jones,_D.R.
Willcox,_O.B.

I'll take D.R. Jones and "Shanks" Evans. And as two Confederates are worth one Federal, I'll take Nathaniel Banks as well.

(By the way, Banks was assigned to someone nearly a year ago, but by now I think it's safe to reassign him, since the person hasn't been on the forum in ages.)

Thanks! Your math might be wrong, though, according to that Confederate math book quoted in the game: “If one Southerner can whip three Yankees, how many Southerners does it take to whip fifteen Yankees?”

So you want me to take Holmes to make it three Southerners?
As for Banks: if the one who had him steps forward, I am willing to trade.

When do you need the written bios?

If you can do Holmes too, that would be great.

There's no fixed deadline. As I've mentioned elsewhere on the forum, implementing post-1861 scenarios will require some new code, and I doubt that Eric will get to that before next week, and then we'll need to test internally, so I think it's at least two weeks before the patch with the scenario is ready, and probably more like three or four. So, don't pull an all-nighter after downing a gallon of coffee!

Gil,
Who is left from the list? Are the remaining generals Federals?
I'm interested. Might make an interesting switch in my march up the alphabet on the gray side of things.

Bill, the ones still out there are:

Porter,_A.
Richardson,_I.B.
Franklin,_W.B.
Davies,_H.E.
Schenck,_R.C.
Heintzelman,_S.P. (high priority)
Howard,_O.O.
Keyes,_E.D.
Tyler,_D. (high priority)
Willcox,_O.B.
Patterson,_R. (high priority)

I think they're mostly Federals, though there are still some Confederates among them. (High priority guys are 100-percenters in their scenarios.)

Gil,
Heintzelman is up. Daniel Tyler (1799-1882) is the one I assume you want and I'll do him next. Robert Patterson is listed in Generals in Blue as a 90-day major general of volunteers who did not get appointed to his full rank. He did serve out the war as a major general of Pennsylvania troops. He doesn't even appear with a bio in Generals in Blue, but is among the 15 pages of fellows who served in a brevet role, but never appointed to the full rank. I do have info from other sources, so I'll get him third.

Wow, that was fast.

As for Tyler, that's the guy. He was a brig. gen. at 1st Bull Run, so he's in that scenario. And Patterson is someone who would only be in that scenario.

Wasn't Robertson the guy who stayed in the Valley when Johnston took the train to Manassas? I am sure he got smoked for that.

Battleline: So you finally got "Generals in Blue"? That is great.

jkBluesman,
Yes, Patterson was that dude. Got to give the old man credit though for wanting to go through all of the military stuff at the age of 69. His mess-up in the Valley was one of the main reasons his commission wasn't continued after his 90 days were up.

I'll take three more:
The tragic Oliver Otis Howard of the ill-fated XI Corps
Antietam-killed Israel Bush Richardson (Fighting Dick or Greasy Dick were his nicknames) and
IV Corps Commander Erasmus Darwin Keyes
Thanks,

Okay, I'll put you down for them.

By the way, jkBluesman's doing Alexander Lawton, so when you're in the L's please skip from Lane to Leadbetter.

When there won't be another patch till July or even later, what about the generals that are 25 or 100 percenters for the future Fredericksburg scenario?

I don't know who those are yet, so I haven't tried to assign them. (Most would be guys we have from the two earlier scenarios, or just simply happen to have already, but there should be a few new ones.)
