Delay and retreat (with armor units)

Delay and retreat (with armor units)

Post by Kuokkanen »

I've been told that in defense tanks are to be kept in reserve they are used only to counter breakthroughs. But wouldn't it be possible give them some more active role, like delaying enemy advance? I give you historical example: in Karelia one finnish StuG was hiding in woods next to open meadow (or other opening). T-34 rolled from other side of it, didn't see waiting StuG on the other side, and was destroyed less than 100 m away. Two other T-34 met same fate. After this lone StuG retreated.

How something like this is done in SPWAW correctly? I guess it takes couple recon units in addition of tanks. On the otherhand, it could be done with just ATGs and appropriate transport vehicles. I did that several times with SP 10 years ago.
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Matti,

I play with C&C ON.  When I am playing Delay or Defend missions I initially deploy my core units to Advance Mode, never Defend Mode.  And I usually employ my core units in a mobile fashion.  I rarely passively sit still for a whole battle with my core units when fighting Delay and Defend battles.

I'll most often use my support units to hold key sectors of the battlefield while my core units actively seek out and engage the enemy, most often by attacking one or both enemy flanks.  I also often send fast units into the enemy rear to seek and destroy the enemy artillery.

Of course, if the enemy charges straight into my weapons, then I will sit still and blast them.  But I always plan to use my core in a mobile manner.

Matti,

Look at some of the DARs I've posted.  You will see how I use my mobile forces to ambush and destroy enemy units.  In particular, look at the second battle (the battle near Bizerte, March 1943) in my "Group Anders Long Long Road" DAR to see how I fight against a stronger enemy.
