Can yout TF or TG shoot down enemy search planes

As in the subject title, can your TG, TF or Cap get to the enemy search planes before they relay your position or is it an automatic spotting? What can be done when an enemy search plane is above your group?

I noticed in the squadron report, looking over it at the end of a game, one of my SBDs "shot down by CAP while searching" (or some equivalent wording).

I have no idea if that prevented the searchplane from making a report.

Can you increase the CAP and shoot down more searchplanes? If this prevents reporting, it'd be a tactic to use: increase the CAP, reduce the spotting.

Your CAP can shoot down enemy search planes. I don't know if this can prevent a sighting report and if more CAP increases your chances, I'll have to find out from Alex (might take a little while as he's moving house).

By the time you are notified that you have spotted an enemy search plane then they will have reported your location. As soon as the searchplane spots you they start following your TG and a new searchplane is launched in that sector, so shooting them down won't gain a huge tactical advantage anyway.

Well, hopefully CAP has at least a small chance of preventing a sighting report. There were a few cases where US fighters downed IJN search planes before the latter relayed any (useful) information.
