Spyware in FoF Download!?

Post by solops »

After downloading, installing and playing FoF from Gamersgate (while I waited on my hardcopy in the mail) I ran my ZoneAlarm spy detector and found two pieces of spyware. Both files were FoF files:
the uninstall exe and an "lnk" file. They were listed as Win32.Coupons browser plug-in spyware with a "medium" risk. What is going on?

I scanned FOF with PestPatrol and AdAware and they got nothing. I quit using ZoneAlarm because I got tired of erroneous findings that alerted me for nothing. I also got a lot of lockups after about a week of installing it. I worked with it for a long time and it just kept causing problems on BOTH computers. It may be better now though, I don't know as its been a couple years.

False alarms of your software.

On a sidenote, are you sure you pruchased via GamersGate? They do not sell FOF.

You are correct. Sorry, this was a download direct from Matrix. I got the HOI Doomsday Armageddon download from Gamersgate recently as well. Sorry about the confusion. That experience confirmed my dislike of GG. Everyone should do it like Matrix.

I have never gotten a false report from ZA before. I have been using their firewall for many years and their spy detection package for about 18 months with no other problems. After wasting time on McAfee, Norton, Trend and Webroot, it is the best out there for my money.

I had thought the "spyware" might be related to the download version from GG. Obviously not since it is a Matrix download. I shall uninstall, clean the registry and then reinstall from the hard-copy disk version, then see if the scan gives the same result.  It is odd that ZA was specific about the type of "infection." I have CoG too, and it did not cause any problems.

Will report back next week. BTW beautiful manual!

Strange, Never heard this before. I use adaware and it didnt show anything other than the usual web tracking cookies that I always delete. I use CA's anti virus and haven't seen anything.

I have no idea what these might be.  Do you know what the exact filenames the spyware detection program flagged?
