Where is the Mongolian Army ?

Post by el cid again »

Significant as early as 1938 in the Kholkan Gol Incident, these units occupied parts of Sinkiang in 1944 -

so where are they???? They would be Soviet controlled forces.

I learned (World War II Nation by Nation) that the Mongol Army was small (and served remarkably everywhere - all the way to France - on the German side no less!!!) [Those were prisoners recruited into anti-partisan units]

I added a 1st Mongol Infantry Brigade at Ulan Bator. It is like a Soviet Rifle Regiment with an added cavalry recon company.

I added a 2nd Mongol Cavalry Brigade forward along the Manchukuo Border - holding the Kholkan Gol.
It is a like a Soviet Cavalry Brigade (that is, 1/3 of a Soviet Cavarly Division)

There were four Mongolian Cavalry Divisions (5th - 8th) and one Mongolian Mechanized Brigade (7th; formed in late 1941 or in 1942) located in (Outer) Mongolia [I don't think that 1st - 4th Mongolian Cavalry Divisions existed between 1941-45; the German Army identified a 1st Mongolian Cavalry Division fighting them but this is not confirmed by Soviet sources]. The Mongolian Army formed part of a Cavalry-Mechanized Group in 1945 and was part of the forces attacking Manchuria.

This appears to be correct. It appears that "a few thousand" participated in the invasion of Manchuria. A number did go West - and were captured - and four battalions were captured by the US Army in France. Seems the Germans let their prisoners go - with pay - to form anti-partisan bands. Seems they liked being free to run around with guns and rape with impunity!

The first "German" soldier my dad saw on June 6th, was Mongol, a member of the 709th Infantry Division IIRC..
(The Mongol rgt members wore a disctinctive badge on their sleeve, just up from the elbow.)Just another of the auslander units.
(The first "German" tank he saw was a black-painted Sherman), later, on June 7th..
