I don't seem to be able to transfer my carrier planes that I had sent to Henderson field back to my carriers, is that a nono once you send them [carrier planes] to another base?

Yes that's a no no - explained in the manual I think.

Yes, transferring planes from carriers to landbases is a one way process.
