AAR: Defense of the USSR part 9

Post by Vic »

Counterattacks near Maikop in the South and directly south of Moscow went horribly wrong. Only counterattacks north of Moscow made some headway but at tremendous costs.

Here is a picture of the situation around Moscow and Leningrad at the end of my turn. As you can see a makeshift front is forming to protect the Lend Lease help comming in from Murmansk.

If the blizzards start the germans will get -40% combat mod and i hope i can use those turns to actually harm the german war machine a bit.

Wait for blizzard with the main attacks. Wasting your forces now is not a good idea
except there is a weak point in the german front you can attack.
Very sad that such a good weather comes back in november :(

Yeah just defend until you get snow, then pound him. What a waste of attacks in the southern portion of Moscow area in good weather. And you LOST LENNINGRAD? How could you lose LENNINGRAD don't you remember it was a 900 day siege for LINNENGRAD! lol

German Turn 10: December 1941.

Winter strikes and the German army is unprepared and will fight at a significant disadvantage for the next 2 months (3 turns)

The Soviet paid a heavy toll last turn in attacking. I have built a lot of infantry to withstand the expected Soviet onslaught.

Along the Black Sea, my troops begin to cross into the Causcausas. My next objective is the oil fields of Maikop (circled below)

Group B is able to push into the rough terrain NW of Stalingrad.

Group A is moving towards Voronezh. This is not particularly strategic but it will protect the flanks of both AG C and Group B.

The main battle of the war is now in front of Moscow. The big decision was whether to pull back a few hexes or stand in place. Given my relative strength, I decide to stand in place. If the offensive is too harsh, I will step back a hex or 2. Stepping back will put the Soviets in the plains and help my counter strike in the spring.

Up north, the circle hex represents Murmansk (it is actually further north). Capturing this hex will block lend lease. The Soviets have lined the road with infantry in heavy woods. This will be almost impossible to blast through. My decision here is whether to try to gain Murmansk or hold the north while sending troops down to the Moscow battle.

Here is the overall situation. Things are still on track. Hope to make a big push once the weather clears.

Why i lost Leningrad so quickly?

I should have avoided that the city could be attacked from 4 different sides and i should have blown the bridges over the Neva.

Should.. should.. should... this game seems to be filled with "shoulds"

Well Vic, That was very clear after the last turn that Tom would start the final attack on Leningrad now.
Hehe with attacks from 4 directions and strong artillery support there was nothing to stop him.
Blowing up both bridges could have been a help, but not sure. I would still have attacked even with destroyed bridges.
Much higher losses for the germans, but in the end THEY are in Leningrad.
You did all that was possible i think.
Maybe you could have protected the supply line to Leningrad better but that´s it.
