My glorious ictory

Post by Superfly »

Hey,
I'e been readign "Fiasco", a book about the military experience in Iraq and it inspired me to dust off HTTR after haing it and not playing it much. ( apologies my \/ key doesn't work). I got the strategy guide and hae played renkum a few times now. I got decisie ictories in the others but it was pretty much a case of stick your troops on the objecties and press ffwd. This tiem I applied some of the techniques in the strat guide and got a much better kill ratio. I also could tell where the opposing troops were coming from this time which was nice, and aprt from the 1 infantry diision you can see none of the penetrated my lines.
The weird thing was the AI seemed intimidated, it barely tried to attack my defensie posn in the east. Normally it takes the large force you can see and goes flat out. It did a couple of reccies this time but didn't attack. I guess my question is - did the extra effort I put into laying out my defense depth and making sure i used the illage for coer deter the the comp from attacking or was it just blind luck?

On the west the sw defensie posn I held all game and the troops in the forest first tried to burst through but were repelled and the had a go at the road halfway up the board. But I had troops ther too so they eentually resorted to roaming through the woods which didn't work out so well for them as I bombarded the crap out of them and then launched an eneloping attack.

Of the 3 times I'e played this scenario they hae neer attacked from the north road. I also suspect that the force to the east comes from the south oer the bridge rather than the east road.

If you knew the history of the campaign, could you predict this or is it a question of guard all roads and hope for the best?

Anyway, that was fun. It's a hell of a game and I'm looking forward to some of the larger scenarios although I would neer hae enjoyed it if not for strat guide. If you're considering getting this game, get the strategy guide as well unless you're a hard core grognard.I'm a (pretty ordinary)chess player looking for something a bit different. It's great to find a stratgey game where the AI is capable of putting up a fight. I can't begin to imagine how full on this must be with 2 human opponents.

Cheers,
Willem

Willem,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed playing HTTR. I've played the Renkum scenario a number of times and have found that the Germans do attack from the north, but not always. The AI determines its plan, not according to a pre-arranged script but rather assess the situation it finds and works out its own plan to achieve its objectives. So its dynamic not prescriptive. Sometimes it will favour going hard for this objective and doing so via this approach, while other times it may favour another approach or another objective.
