Dumps and HQs ?

Post by Dean Robb »

Can ammo dumps and HQs (tent complexes) be killed? I've shelled the hell out of them, shot them up with MGs, parked tanks on them blazing away and used them for infantry target practice and although I've gotten LOTS of "xxx is hit" messages, I've never [apparently] done any damage to them or killed them.

Am I supposed to be able to? How about causing casualties to the men insides (canvas not being known for it's bulletproof properties...)?

I spent ages shooting at an HQ and Ammo Dump with a couple of engineer squads (they wouldn't use their satchel charges) and can say yes, they do blow up.
HQ tents just vanish but Ammo Dumps are considerably more spectacular... try it and see. You might have to stand a hex or two away just to be on the safe side.

It would be extremely cool if engineers or commandos could blow them up with their satchel charges.

What kind of armor rating does it have? I've literally hit them with hundreds of rounds and not killed one.

I believe Wild Bill said in another thread that he'd found a bug in the code for units using satchel charges, AT mines, Molotovs, etc. and that it was fixed in v2.0; they'll use them now.

An ammo dump is a huge vast complex and just a wee bit larger then your average tank. This is why it takes so many hits to destroy it. It would take a lot of hits to destroy a city block too.

I think a lot of the dumps have an armor of 20. I'm pretty sure they plan to take that away. Still though, you'd think a big pile of explosives wouldn't take too much to get going. I had one hit several times with 81mm mortars. It caught fire, but no hit messages, and no BOOM!

Different nationalities have different methods for battlefield ammo resupply. The americans keep their arty shells and fuzes seperate while the USSR shipped both in the same crate (at least that's the way it is now & this was likely the same way then). Hitting a HE round with a lot of force is not always what is needed to set it off (heat, shock and friction will do nicely tho.). Additionally, piles of ammo are supposed to be segregatged to minimize cook off should one pile detonate.

Clearly ammo dumps are more combustible than metal things on track or wheels and I do not mean to minimize that, its just that neither are they a pile of fire wood waiting for a match

Those dumps should not have armour, perhaps if you Dean have been shooting at an armoured one with rifles then it's not surprising you haven't managed to kill one.

when an ammo dump blows up it kills all troops in the same hex, at least did so in SP3 so reload from the hexes next to it Image
Also it makes the hex impassable.

hmmm...come to think about it I'm not 100% certain if I've blown up an ammo dump yet, several HQ's though. A good case for some tests perhaps?

If you succeed in destroying a dump or a HQ, do you get Victory points?

If so, do you get enough to make a difference or completely substitute the holding of terrain objectives?

I have often wondered about what techniques to use to design a game based on the attacking force having to destroy an objective and get away with as many survivors as possible, while the defender should prevent the destruction or at least destroy or capture the raiding party.

Any suggestions, anyone? Image

If I understand your question right, it used to be I believe that you could tack on the amount of victory points to a given hex. If memory serves me and it may not be this time Image. So you could have very few victory hexes and yet have a good number of victory points. As to the desruction, if you were to put an ammo dump on a victory hex to be destroyed you would have to go with the players honor that it would have to be destroyed. Also I seem to remember there were some hexes that refused you entry on in SP and I think a burning ammo dump was one, not to sure on that one.

Anyone else think they're seeing HQ tent units not doing their job?

It takes a lot of work to put out ammo dumps and fuel dumps. In sp3 it would make the hex impassable, but you can land on them with helicopter borne infantry. This happened in the vietnam campaign in sp3 a few times to me.
