Updated Addin: Milestones

Post by CrashDavis »

While waiting on Barry Bonds to tie/surpass Hank Aaron for the all-time HR leader, it got me to thinking about an update to the milestones addin. So I sat down and wrote an update to it that will inform you of active players who are "approaching" a milestone in the following categories:
a) 3000 Games - any player between 2700-2999 games
b) 3000 Hits - any player between 2700-2999 hits
c) 500 HRs - any player between 451-499 home runs
d) 250 Wins - pitchers between 230-249 wins
e) 3000 K's - pitchers between 2700-2999 strike outs

Is it possible/worth consideration to create something that would be able to determine a player's pace?

i.e. If I have Miguel Cabrera on fire hitting 20 home runs already 40-something games into the season, what is he on pace for at the end of the year? Of course, we ALL know that there is no guarantee what so ever that this will happen, between what pitchers he faces, which stadiums he hits in, what he may injure, and other "hidden" Puresim variables. However, I hear it all the time on MLB games on TV, as well as articles in MLB.com when they say "A-Rod is on pace to hit 72 home runs" or "Reyes should steal 77 bases at this pace", etc.

Everyone understands that there is no guarantee the player will reach that mark, but it's always fun to ponder the 'What if...' angle.

First an important announcement from our sponsor:

If you downloaded the update to Milestones posted before this message, please download it again from the CrashDavis website. I made a calculation mistake when coding the new feature. It was adding current season stats twice to the players overall career stats. Ooops. My bad. Fixed the problem and uploaded the fixed milestones addin to the website.

Of course you'd have to mandate a minimum number of games be played beforehand - say ~30 games (a months worth). Then you'd want to look at only those that are leading the association in a statistical category. Then produce a possible value the player could reach for a 154/162 game schedule.

In addition, you could also have a side by side comparison of the players pace value, with that of your current associations single-season leader in that statistical category. The only knocks against this is:
1) I wouldn't know whether your single-season leader played 154 or 162 games and
2) Wouldn't work for associations that have not completed their first season yet

Finally, which set of statistical categories did you have in mind?

I would say the 'traditional', more popular leader board stats; HRs, SBs, RBI and hits for a batter -- Wins, Losses, Saves, Ks and CGs for a pitcher. Though CGs is a bit stretching it.

Yeah, the CG stat would be a stretch...alot of outside variables would come into play. But the others sound reasonable.
Let me work on this a bit and I'll keep you updated.
