AAR: Vodka or Sake (Japan)

Post by Stregg »

Victory conditions of ensuring the survival of my airfields and secondary of sinking some amphibs. Since I have aircraft logistics checked, it is another come as you are party in regards to stand-off munitions. You gotta make them count!!

I have a surface group with 2 of the new Japanese Kongo class DDG's, 2 diesel electric subs and 2 airfields. AF1 (tokyo) has aircraft from a damaged US carrier, 10 f-14a, 6 vikings, 12 hornets, some intruders with non stand-off armaments (4 rigged as tankers) and 4 with iron bombs. Since there was no other munitions available, they stayed as they were. AF2 had 5 sentries, 6 nighthawks, 4 strike eagles with agm-130, and probably 20 f-25J with sparrow 3 loadouts.

My initial moves were to launch sentries (1 north, 1 east-northeast), and launch some cap of F-15j's. I also launched the F-15e ad f-117's to attack the airfield a short distance to the north.

After putting the game into run, I was given contact of a sub to the west of Af2. I immediately launch a pair of vikings to run this contact down which they proceeded to do in short fashion. I also had contact of the invasion force coming in from the northwest. This would be a tough nut to crack as it had a Slava, 2 Sovernemy, 2 Udalay and other escorts.

The sub to the west was identified as a yankee notch, which could have nuclear standoff missles. My vikings sank it with mk50 torpedos, it got me wondering what else with nukes or other type warheads were lurking beneath the waters. I really didnt have the asw assets to search the whole water map area, looks like I better out more cap out to have more missles to kill incoming vampires. Luckily, I didnt see any sub launched missles the rest of the game.

It became obvious that the enemy was trying to find my sag and establish air superiority, this I denied him with my f-14's and f-15j's. I was starting to grow concerned with the rate I was using my missles and the sheer number of his airforce. My airplanes that shot off their missles could only turn around to minimal load as no more air-air loadouts were available. While I kept waiting for the convoy of trucks to bring me more missles, my existing aircraft where having their way with the soviet air force. The soviets did manage to down 5 f-15j's when they mobbed me with over a dozen mig-31's.. ouch!! They basically went home for lack of fuel and not lack of missiles like my aircraft.

The air war calmed down considerably and I decided it was time to thin out the invasion surface group. I really needed the Slava dead so I could eliminate the threat of his SS-n-12's and the Sa-6's.

Here is where I learned a little lesson, the TALD decoys dont seem to draw enemy fire at all, was hoping to get them to burn some SAM's on them. I then launched some in tandem with some harm's and harpoon's and did a night attack with my f-117's that were able to reload after knocking out the airfield to the north. This attack consisted of all my available harms, 75% of my harpoons (air and sub launched), 104 decoys, and my 6 brave f-117's with laser guided bombs. So, 16 harms, 28 harpoons, 104 decoys and 12 lg bombs later, I sank a Sovernemny (the f-117 got him), damaged another, and heavily damaged the Slava but unfortunately didnt sink it but did knock out his missle guidance radars. Not near as good as I had hoped for.

With overall munitions levels critical, a pickup truck stopped by AF1 and dropped off enough iron bombs to equip 2 f-18c's. I think I am gonna shoot me some logistics planners [:)]

After beating back some more air attacks, I was pretty much out of air to air loadouts. My anti ship loadouts were down to the sub torpedos, 4 vikings with 2 harpoons each, 4 f-117's (lost 2 killing the Soverenemy) with laser guided bombs, and some f-18's with iron bombs.

I moved my subs in and immediately lost one to a ss-n-14 from a Udaloy, the other managed to creep his way and them stop and drift as the convoy sailed over him. using all available air assests to provide distraction, I launched my hail mary attack. I totally ignored warships and launched my torpedos at the amphibs, my air assets only launched at amphibs only. I suceeded in killing the amphibs and the Slava with torpedos before my sub was killed. I lost the f-18's and f-117's (forgot it was now daylight). The vikings fly home alone.

I had to ready aircraft except for sentries, all fighter aircraft had internal weapons only. My atack aircraft had a few more iron bomd loadouts come available but they would be futile against the udaloy point defenses. Soooo.. I sat back and waited to get clobbered..
and waited, and waited.. He had aircraft up but nothing that had ground munitions.

My surface group eventually got close enough to finish off the soviet invasion fleet.

Despite terrible logistics, just love the 3-6 ready times after a mission, I got lucky and avoided damage to my airfields. A hard earned win anyway.

On to next scenario in global conflicts 3 battleset.
