Gun shields ...

Gun shields ...

Post by Arralen »

Would it be possible to add gun shields by giving the units a front armor value & slope.
I mean - I could do it in the editor and run a quick test, of course, but would the code really work as intended?

I bet this would result in the programme treating the A/T gun as an AFV. Tanks would fire AP at it ect. All sorts of funny things could happen.
In any event the gunshield was only intended as a shrapnel and (maybe) small arms stopper. Giving it an armour value would be overrating its effect by a considerable amount- especially when you consider that the crew had to move about to work the gun.

I am not sure but I am afraid that if given armor rating, when the gun is hit it may explode (?) like a tank and receive a destryied status? No meaning in testing. If it was coded so that it would be shield against rifle/etc fire, it would work.

Doesn't that make sense though? After all, guns can be destroyed by a direct hit, or overturned by near misses. Right now, you can only lose a gun by having its crew wiped out. Changing this would allow crews a better chance of survival. In campaign games it would be nice if you only had to fix the gun, not get a new one. Of course, this might require major recoding. For all I know, the gun exists only as a graphic, and the crew is the only thing that's 'there'. Taking gunshields into account is an interesting concept. Most of them were pretty small, but must have offered some protection. This would also penalize bad designs, like the early Italian 47mm ATG's, which had no shield.

Not if the armor value is about 5..8 - most HMG (>10mm) should penetrate this, at least at short range.

But protecting against small arms and shrapnel is exactly what I intended - and what is seriuously missing up to now.
And keep in mind that the Arti has been beefed up with the patch - rounds from 105mm up know do damage to adjecent hexes also (IIRC).

Hi Seth,

I have seen quite a few instances when my Anti-Tank Gun or Anti-Aircraft gun has been destroyed without the crew being killed. When this occurs the crew does disappear, but the message is "20mm AA Gun Destroyed". This usually happens when a tank is firing at the gun. I always assumed that this simulated the tank round actually hitting and destroying the gun itself.

Well, it certainly does destroy the gun, but only because the crew is all dead. You get destroyed messages for infantry too, even though the men are perhaps not 'destroyed', but merely dead, a less pleasant word.

Hello, no, the AI doesn't know how to use this!! We had looked into this during testing, no go I'm afraid, you get some weirdness if tried!!
