Barrages

Post by randell765 »

Ok,finally broke down and bought the game. Still need that screen resolution fix. Anyways, Even with the reading I am stumbling through a bit. Every time I barrage with my artillary I am not hitting anything, I don't understand why. I have done air recon, and know the enemys strenghts and yet I keep hitting nothing for casulties., not sure if I am doing something wrong. Any help?

I edited this, instead of saying i hit nothing, it shows casulties as ?.

You don't know what casualties you caused - why would you?

The only way you can have an idea is if you recce the same hex next activation phase and assuming they haven't moved anythign in or out you could then compare strengths.

I know the manual explains the effects of barrages, but I'm not sure I understoo them, probably cause English is not my native language. In any case, I have two doubts.

1. Does artillery fire in defense? If so, is that the reason to reload artillery, instead of reloading and barraging (artillery not reloaded has no defense capability)? I read this point in another thread, but I didn't see an answer.

2. Does it make sense to barrage into a hex which is not attacked by inf / cav during the same impulse? I assume an only barrage attack makes sense if it substantially affects the target strength. If it affects (only) readiness, the target could probably recover lost readiness at the end of the impulse. Can I assume the barrage susbstantially affects strength?

1/ Artillery only fires when you tell it to - and it fires before movement, so troops attacking out of a hex you barraged get hit.

2/ Yes - artillery causes casualties.  Gas attacks mainly attack readiness but can also cause casualties.  Therefore non-gas attacks are good at any target, but gas attacks are best if you're attacking, in order to take advantage of their lowered readiness.

Is there any benefit for having 2 artillay occupy the same hex?   Can both artillary fire if they occupy the same hex?

Actually...

I do believe that if you air recon the hex on the first impulse and barrage it, you will be able to see the damage to the units on the counters themselves on the second impulse. That is.. a unit at 18 strength will be shown after the barrage and in the next impulse with... say... 16.

Assuming the barrage wasn't so effective as to cause a rout. ;)

Sure, you can stack artillery units and fire them from the same hex at the same target or different targets.

Artillery is very worth having, its a constant drip-drip of casualties when you keep barrages going month on end.

Against troops without any trenches, or only low level trenches, it also does quite a lot of damage, a third of a corps worth every shot, say, with a good barrage.  Thats why you have to dig, if you sit there getting shelled with no trenches then you'll melt away...

If you're able to barrage enemy troops outside of their protective trenches, clear terrain will maximize the damage inflicted.
