It's obvious the French have been caught napping on the Riviera while on their holiday break...

Indeed,

The uniform is rather tatty but passable. However, that bush growing in the middle of his face, is quite another thing...

Our boys, prefer style and good horse. As do our ladies.

Operation "Hjaco's Gambit" is now underway.

Reports from the Western Front indicate a serious supply shortage of men, phrased in terms of "I told you we needed more divisions.".  Extra delicacies are sent to the front to stiffen the defenders spirits.

Operation Hjaco finishes successfully as Serbian commandos seize Trieste in a daring amphibious assault, showing what WW1 armies could do with some gigantic brass balls swinging between a general's legs.

Operation Certain Doom begins on the Eastern Front aimed at Austria.

Russian forces continue to advance, threatening Brunn, as the defending Austrians are swept away.

On the Western Front (he's not attacking through Belgium) the weight of the German assaults seem focused on the southern end of the line so far.

Progress is slow.  The poilus are fortified with garlic and wine.  [:D]

Argh!

Kaiser Lava:

"Moltke what are you doing? The Schlieffen plan calls for a sweeping invasion through Belgium, North of Paris."

General Von Moltke:

"I didn't like the plan. I am now deploying our secret weapons to the front."

Hey !

I am just off the air for a weeks time and apparently now being the father of some surely ambiguous cunning Masterplan [:D]

"Operation "Hjaco's Gambit" is now underway."

"Operation Hjaco finishes successfully as Serbian commandos seize Trieste in a daring amphibious assault, showing what WW1 armies could do with some gigantic brass balls swinging between a general's legs."

Keep me informed what all this will end with (apart from the early retirement of the two Kaisers) [;)]

Austria's eastern border is really under serious pressure.  Russian forces are 2 hexes from Vienna and only Lemberg is left out of all the main border towns.

The Western Front, well.  Cheese reinforcements are being debated back at HQ with the Brits being delayed (as always).  Its not entirely in my favour - is WW1 ever entirely in one combatants favour?  But the casualty lists overall look pretty good to me.

510k Entente
615k CPs

Not bad given the Frog artillery has barely opened fire, though I suspect the Austrians are on most of the receing end from me.

Its like how I was telling Lava over email - in this game its not really fair to say that the CPs have a decisive advantage in the beginning which fades over time and must be capitalised on no matter what, a la the situation Germany faces in WW2.

In every game of this I've played in multiplayer, the best way to describe it is that the Central Powers largely have the initiative at start of play.  They can choose the decisive front more forcefully than the Entente can.  But its not like the CPs can neglect defence, in all fronts bar the decisive one they will be forced to defend with probably very little in defence.  Whenever I play the CPs against a human opponent I feel under siege right from the get go.  Theres no happy time equivalent to 1940-1941 you see in WW2 games.

I'm not sure about whether the reverse is true.  There must come a point when casualties are so high that a frugal CP player may manage to achieve victory in 1918 - certainly I've seen it against the AI, watching the AI throw away millions upon millions of men to no avail and end up crumbling.  I've not seen anything like this in pbem but then I think thats probably because I as CPs tend not to call it quits easy but press on no matter what, when perhaps my emphasis should have moved onto defence earlier.

I was trying that one on Hjaco in our last game, a more cautious CP game, but alas, we'll not see how that panned out.

It's true, but Russia's army will never turn into the Red Army either. The late war won't be the equivalent of 1944 / 1945 : the CP should retain a chance to win until very late in the war instead of just trying to last one turn longer than its historical counterpart (as is often the case in WWII).

Tis' true,

I think the reason for that is that the CP doesn't have any strategic movement on the first turn, which seeing as he is the aggressor, seems a bit odd.

Bah...

Such are games... they are only games.

Meanwhile, I remain in play and plan to gobble up the world!

Mmm. I've been stomped by the purple peril before. I think you discount Nicky at your own risk in this game. There is no overwhelming force like you suffer in WW2 games around 1944 when the US/USSR war machines are in full swing, but on the other hand, its not like GoA gets any easier for Germany as time goes on. Its just constant pressure.

And there are a finite number of casualties that Germany can withstand.

Indeed...

As long as my navy can survive...

I am also preparing to let loose the dogs of war with unrestricted submarine warfare, because, basically I'm pissed (American phraseology not English).

[;)]

I'm sure the yanks won't like that very much.
