Still interest in this game?

Post by Zap »

I was investigating for what might be a purchase but saw one poster note there was not enough interest to get his on-line league started. Whats the facts.

Well, I belong to two, both 10+ teams. There is some cross ownership between both. At present there may not be enough people interested in online leagues. But hopefully, as more people come to MaxFB, that area will grow.

I think that more smaller leagues might see some success. Large leagues often end up with a few active owners and the rest just roster adjusters at best. But, its hard to say.

Only David and Matrix know how many people actually own MaxFB, so who knows what percentage of that plan to join an online league.

As a member of one of these leagues going into its second season, I would say one of the difficulties has been the evolving nature of the game to this point.  With new positions assignments and having to retool playbooks for each release, its taken a lot of work to this point.  Additionally, the on-line side of the game is not streamlined like a mature game (FOF or OOTP as examples).  However with these new releases and a more stable game play, I think we will see an uptick in interest and the custom playbooks will give MaxFB an online feel we haven't seen since FBPro.

As a newcomer to the game (really only bought it a month ago) I am still getting used to the game.  However, once I begin setting up my playbooks, I will be looking to join.  I suspect that there are more like me lurking on the site.

For me, I have never been part of an online league, but would consider it in the future - just don't know how much time I can devote to it...

Some things you have to remember though - the offline market is quite a bit larger than the online market, that is a given.

Also, there is always quite a bit more consumers that have a given game and don't post on forums than those that do.

Interest in Maximum Football at this point, I believe, is surviving only by word of mouth. With that in mind, I think everyone here who has and enjoys the game should try, without going over the top, to spread the word that it is actually quite good. I am pretty well known within the Madden PC community and over at Football-Freaks (where I have been the catalyst since Madden 2003 in establishing annual coach/gm slider sets), I currently have Maximum Football in my signature with a link to the MaxFB site. I have also spoken in PM's to several members and have spoken of the game itself in the forums there.

Ultimately, I think, the game is going to have the greatest appeal to the "coach moders" out there - which I myself am (let's face it, it isn't going to have mass "GM'er" appeal due to the lack of GM features at this point (eg. trades, salary caps, FA negotiations, etc.) nor will it, I think, have mass appeal to the arcade gamer either (unless they have a lower end system that can't run Madden or are in an anti-EA mood (which I can completely understand and have been at times too)), yet this mode is certainly welcome. That's not to say that a GM'er cannot enjoy this game, nor an arcade player not have fun with it - they both certainly can. However, the game basically fits into a niche market within a niche market - meaning the potential consumer base is going to be small anyway. That's why it is so important for people here who have and enjoy the game to spread the word.

In doing so, I try to direct people to the main site and to browse the forums and try to implore people to read the FAQ's about it in order to make an informed decision- there is nothing worse than a person purchasing the game under false pretenses, believing the game to be something that it isn't or ever intended to be. But one thing this game has got going for it in spades, even though it is low budget and a single developer, is the level of commitment, communication, and accessibility of the developer. You just don't see this much at all nowadays, and never with big budget conglomerations (eg. EA).

Indeed, if this wasn't the case and we were presented with the intital offering of v1 back in March 2006 with none of David's further dedication and commitment, I would have been very sour towards MaxFB now...but that wasn't and isn't the case (so a kind hearted thank you to David if you are reading this, and to the small but devoted beta testers as well! ).

I have been lurking here with the thought of buying this game and as I read more about it, I am realizing that the mode I enjoy playing, GM Mode, is not yet part of the game... as a long time player of games like OOTP and Football (Worldwide Soccer) Manager, ect, it is in the combination of GM and Coach that I like....I think I will hold off buying this game for now and see if some type of GM mode will eventually be offered...

Redwolf, thank you for you insightful comments, and hopefully the game may evolve into what I want down the road. It does look like a very good game, but I am concerned that I will become bored of a coaching only mode right now....thanks again
