CAW compared to WitP

Post by Major SNAFU_M »

I have WitP and enjoy it very much (when I find the time).

How does CAW compare on naval combat.

Perhaps a better way to answer this question:

If I play the COral sea battle in WitP and then in Caw, what would be the major differences?

Good Question. I haven't done that scenario in either game yet. From what I **have** done - the complexity factor in WiTP is quite a bit higher, as it the appearent realism factor. CAW seems to have abstracted a lot more - kind of like the diff between HC-Gold - soon to be HCCE and H3 ANW. I like all 4 of them but ANW and WitP are taking longer to get an good handle on. I'm not saying CAW & HC are less (or more for that matter) fun just that the other 2 are more complicated to do well in from my point of view I think they both have PBEM and CAW seems to have an Internet server for Live opponents. Something I hesitate to take on at the moment. It the AI can kill me why would I want to be embarrased by a real human ???? [8|]

I have UV -- same engine as WitP -- and have also played the CS scenario in CaW. You don't have any flexibility in CaW when it comes to arranging/rearranging your fleets. The only thing you can do in CaW is either scuttle or detach a damaged ship; you start the scenario w/the ships already in pre-made TGs/TFs, unless you go into the editor and change it, which isn't as easy as it sounds.

Basically you can use the same strategy for both games; as the Allies, sail your CVs West and dare the the IJN CVs to come after you, within range of your LBA. If not, you can use your fleets at distance to protect PM and stop the invasion force.

Surface combat in CaW is very "hit and miss," mostly miss; it's much more frequent in WitP/UV .

CaW does make use of cloud cover, something which is more abstracted in WitP/UV -- you only have "wx reports" -- and not easy manipulated to your advantage.

I think for a game of limited depth and easy learning curve, CAW is excellent. It really depends what you are looking for.

Some want games that require graduate level work to play and some want to be able to play as soon as they finished running the installer. CAW is closer to the latter.
