German forts on the Frenhc border 1914

Post by SMK-at-work »

i've been looking for info on the German fortifications along het French bordr in 1914 - there doesn't seem to be a lot on the 'net tho - does anyone know of any sources?

I have found 1 page in French on hte fortification of Strassbourg after 1870 tho - the english translation is at http://tinyurl.com/37banb & makes an interesting read once you get past the idiosyncracies of the auto-translator!! :)

For example Diedenhofen (french Thionville)

On the main page above there are also photographs of some forts of Festung Metz, and of Liege (germ. Lüttich)

Below some photos of fortress Cologne (germ. Köln)

Thanks Rhetor - I was pointed to some other sites too - eg http://www.bunkerarchaeology.net/node/449, and http://alainlecomte.free.fr/France02.htm

Thanks, SMK

Some time ago I've been looking at Liege through Google Earth, and I believe I have found a few forts. Should anyone be interested, here are the rough coordinates

50deg,36'26''N, 5deg 27'53''E (Flamelle?)
(Hollogne?) 50deg 38'46''N i 5deg 27'57'' E
(Loncin?) 50deg 40'27'' N i 5deg 29'30''E
(the Citadel?) 50deg 39'06''N i 5deg 34'40''E

(Lantin?) 50deg 41'37''N i 5deg 31'35''E
(Liers?) 50deg 41'57'' N i 5deg 34'58''E)

I believe there is a way to make a sort of URL in Google Earth you can give to others to find places.
