is it possible to mod the game to be able to play the ww2 long campaign as the italians, or do i have to use the campaign generator?

No, there's no way to reprogram the Long Campaign to use the Italian nation; you could start it as the Germans and then only buy Italian forces.

The bad news regarding choosing the Germans to start a Long Campaign and then only buying and using Italian troops is that the Long Campaign will still be geared to the Germans (meaning that you will fight historical German battles at historical German dates).
 
Better to simply play a Generated Campaign.  Generated campaigns are more flexible and potentially more challenging anyway.

Not only that Val but you have to remember which game it is as in the save game its headed with Germans vs which ever opponents. If you try to change German to Italians vs who ever the turns do not advance in the game heading on saves. So if you change anything in the original save game it sticks on that particuler turn. And beleave me it gets confusing when you have a lot of campaigns going as I do.
