AT vs SC2 WAW

Post by Magpius »

Advanced Tactics or Strategic Command Weapons and Warfare.
Given these two are both scheduled for release near the end of October, and I only have enough time and cash for committing to 1.
Which one should it be and why?
anyone care to make some comparisons?

I am an avid player of SC2WAW and am eagerly awaiting the expansion pack. But, to be fair, these are two very different games and since this one is not released yet, it is a bit premature to have this discussion.....

You can check out Peoples Tactics if you like. Advanced Tactics is the sequel to that one.

I dont know SC but was by battlefronts webside and looked it up. They do look like they have 2 completely different scopes.
I would think of PT/AT as more in line with games like the DB series or TOAW just with production thrown in.

The very fact that one is in hexes and the other in squares should say it all [:D]

I'm not trying to be provocative, or stir up a whole lot of ranting of "mine's better than yours". I played hours of SC1, a little of PT, some TOAW-COW, CEAW etc etc.
-is this thread too early; perhaps. but I was thinking the discussion could broaden into what people perhaps look for in a game, such as
  • User Interface
  • Game Dynamic, (sequence of play, logic)
  • Graphics
  • Quality of A.i
  • replayability
  • editors
etc.
But done in an a comparative manner with other game systems.
Most reviews (especially within specific game threads (understandably), while not being puff pieces, are often less than objective).
-perhaps this topic is covered elsewhere in general topics, (but I never visit those), and I assume that like myself, most gamers of this genre, have more than 1 of these games.

Once again another comparison in this genre to SC.

Grid vs Hexes...doesn't tell you squat. Look at my first sentence, now that tells all.

Please Agent S, you knew the answer before you posted it.

Victor's on the right track, but just like all initially published PC games of this scope, there will be much refinement needed.

It has to proceed through public Beta just like everyone else.

So ....with that knowledge at hand examine which game has had the most time for development.

Viola! is the answer.

maybe.
but the issue hear is that not that SC1, 2, 3 is better than everything else, simply through longevity or dedicated supporter base, (TOAW has that also).
More a case of if one were to extract all the best aspects out of each, where are the commonalities. what does which better and why. The answer is not always SC.
I enjoyed PT, and will probably get that over SC2WAW, not because, it is necessarily better, but it looks more like the boardgames I used to play. It's why I persist with AGW, for example, no other game has units of comparable detail. SC2 went iso-view, which killed the experience for me. I found little difference (in the game experience), after an hour or so from CIV 2 or command and conquer. But I dont want to start a debate about hex v square, or diplomacy yes/no; gamey vs historical etc..
...perhaps this thread is meaningless, until both games are released.

Most of us have more than one of these games, but that is not what you are asking for.  You are asking for someone to make comparisons regarding AT and SC2WAW.  That limits the number of people that can help you.  Basically, you need someone to respond to you who is part of the AT Beta team and someone who has played the SC WAW game.  Sorry, I have about 8 different turn based war games, but not the SC WAW.  I suggest that you be happy if you can get more than one or 2 responses because you are actually asking for a member of the Beta team who has played the other game.

Good luck.

Well, without giving too much away i'll say that if you think about how different PT is from SC1, you can pretty well gauge the differences between SC2 and AT.  Where the SC series has fixed units that can't stack at all, PT series has a more fluid system of units as 'containers'.  AT expands on some of the limitations of the PT engine in this regard.
