Shortcut Keys request (toggle)

Post by Percopius »

Hi,

May I suggest that the keyboard shortcuts be toggles, meaning that if you hit M for move, you go to Move Mode, you hit M again, and you exit Move Mode.

Im not in favor, or atleast this should be optional.
Its rare that i move more then 1 unit at a time without clicking somewhere else to see stats or what not.
imo.

Hi,

The reason I ask is that, in particular, I would like to see the Move Range Highlight quickly. I would not want to suggest something that would break the game for anybody, but I don't see what problem this would cause. Am I missing something? Would not be the first time[&:].

With your implementation of move mode.

I want to move a unit/units:

1- M to enter move mode.
2- Click unit to move.
3- Click to move unit.
4- repeat from step 2 until done then press M to exit move mode.

If the above is what you have in mind, which was how i read it, but you wasnt being very specific [;)] then im pretty sure i would be annoyed with it quickly when i forget to leave move mode and move my units all over the place.

OK, I guess I am not explaining myself well [:)]

What I meant;

1. Hit 'M' to enter move mode.
2. Now you can 'M' again to leave move mode.

I didn't mean to stay in move mode. I just want to be in move mode for a second to see move range, then pop back out by hitting 'M' twice. It's just using the key that got you into that mode to act like the 'Escape' key as it is now. Just 'M' to enter move mode, and 'M' to exit move mode.

Sorry for the confusion.

But, you may be on to something. Maybe once your in move mode, there should be a unit toggle key that toggles through all the units able to move.

I can understand what Percopius is saying. On a similar subject I'd like to see range rings for aircraft, HQ supply and production as well. It would help with planning.

I agree with range rings for stuff like Aircraft both strike and intercept which is ½ of strike range. And maybe flak and arty ranges to.

Im still not sure follow your idea Percopius. You want range ring like display of all units movement ranges when you hit M key? wouldnt this be very confusion with many units on the screen.

I think what Percopius means is that you can use the 'm' shortcut to highlight which hexes a unit can move to. You might not actually want to move the unit yet, but just know where it can move as part of your overall strategy planning.

So - once you know where you're unit can move, you want to check where the next unit can move.. and rather than find another key on the keyboard.. it would be easier to just click the same 'm' key to toggle off that unit so you can click on the next one and check it.

It makes sense to me anyway! [:D]

I would like to see this work without even pressing the 'm' key. Anything you click on you should highlight relevant hexes, based on the unit type. For land units is could be move radius.. for towns= production radius, for HQ's= supply radius, air unit= strike radius, etc.

Is there a shortcut to advance step by step through the history screen? Currently, I have to click click click the mouse button to go through 100+ steps for the scenario I am playing. Hitting something like < > or [ ] on the keyboard would work.

I think this can´t work the way you want it Percopius.

For example a HQ can both attack AND move, so what range you want to show ?
A plane unit can attack AND move. Also intercept if fighters are there...

To be honest i can´t follow the discussion. When i want to see the supply range of a HQ i use the supply layer.
When i want to see the move range of a unit i select the unit and hit "m" and voila i see the movement range.
Artillery and flak range ?? Artillery 2 hexes, Flak I and II can hit the own and with 50% effect the neighbour hex.
Plane attack range is a bit more difficult that´s sure.
You can estimate the right distance then choose air attack and check if the green tick for your air unit is greyed out
or active. I´m used to counting the hexes. You always have to do this when you choose a new more forwarded air field
for your planes to make sure they are in strike distance after movement !
With too much done automatic the game would be less fun.

I like the clear interface as it is now.

One thing would be really helpful (via hotkey). That´s the intercept range ring for your planes. Good for planning own air cover.
But so far i had no problems here counting hexes.

I wouldnt mind range rings for stuff like Arty,Air,Flak etc. If you have lots of units it can get a little combersome to count hexes i guess. Also if you have different master files stuff will have different ranges. Maybe even different kind of arty with different kind of ranges etc.
But i agree about the move thing. Just select a unit and press M and then ESC when you are done looking [:)]

Ok Awacs, if you often change the mastefiles and have a lot of different ranges to handle such a hotkey showing
these ranges would be helpful indeed.
I played so far only the ww2 masterfile which comes with the game. And i was always very happy with.

Actualy i havent changed my master file yet.
But it was more of a look into the future. It would make it alot easier then having to remember the different ranges for different units of different tech levels. And it would also make planning aircover, flak cover alot easier becouse you have it visualy instead of haveing to count hexes which is much like reading.

And what do you think about the range display for artillery, planes and flak ?
If i could toggle it on/off by a shortcut it would be a nice and helpful feature.
Is something like this possible even with units having different amount of AP ?

Nice Victor. That is very useful information. The keys are very close, so I think this addresses my issue well enough. Shame on me if it's in the manual (I have been too busy playing).
