Changing difficulty settings mid-game

I sort of know what the answer is going to be, but here goes...

Is it at all possible to change any game settings once a game has started?
I'm thinking specifically about near/far start in detailed battles.
I've regretted the choice I made with my current game where I chose medium starting distance - and I would like to change it to near if it's possible.
Is it possible to change that now?

I must say that is a real drawback that player can not change settings in a running game
