What was your BEST moment in a managed game?

Post by Frozen Stiffer »

Mine is taken right from my ning.com profile.

My favorite Puresim experience was when I found myself (actually) cheering and hollering (for real) after I was managing the game where my pitcher threw a no-hitter. Even my wife was excited!

Mine involved a no-hitter also. I had a pitcher who had pretty fair numbers, but got hammered every time he pitched, to where this poor schmuck had like a 6.78 ERA or something. One outing, he pitched a no-no, and was robbed of a perfect game by one lousy walk. This victory caused me to holler and cheer, thrust a victory fist skyward, and do the Happy Dance(TM) around the room. It's the least I could have done for the guy, at whom I screamed "What is WRONG with you?" many times during his previous appearances.

Whoever that guy was, it was his only decent game ever. He went back to getting hammered and I let him go. Some other team picked him up and dropped him after one season, and he retired shortly after that.

Ah, the joys of PureSim. Reality was never this good.

See, THAT is the type of thing I love about managing individual games. You don't get that with mass simming.

Mine was having a pitcher toss a two hit, complete game, shutout in the sixth and deciding game of the World Series to win 2-0. It was special because this guy picked a great moment to pitch the game of a lifetime. I also had to play small ball to push across those two runs so it added a little something that my managerial "skills" helped decide the game.

Another one was having a pitcher get 18 K's in a game.

I've had several of these great moments in my managed games, but the best has gotta be a come-from-behind win in the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs. The winning run is on base, and one of your guys delivers in the clutch, getting that single or double that brings in the game-winning RBI.

Here's a recent example:

"Sunday, July 13, 1941. Double-header with the Cubs.

Game 1. Niggeling vs Jake Mooty.

Niggeling gives up two HRs in the 3rd, and the Cubs jump to a 4-0 lead.

We make it 4-2 in the 6th with RBI singles by Pete Coscarart and Ted Williams.

Ken Heintzelman relieves Niggeling in the 7th. Ken gives up a run in the 8th. 5-2.

Bottom of the 8th. With 2 outs and Williams on 1st, Camilli hits a HR to RF. 5-4. Musial doubles, and then Owen drives in Stan with a single. 5-5. Mooty is finished. Paul Erickson relieves him.

9th Inning. Johnny Wittig relieves Heintzelman. He holds the Cubs.

Bottom of the 9th. 2 outs, Coscarart on 2nd. Williams doubles, and Coscarart scores! The Dodgers come from behind to win it 6-5! Wittig (5-1) gets the win, and Erickson (1-7)loses ."

Yeah man! What makes a moment like that even more exquisite is when the clutch hit is from a pinch hitter you sent to the plate because, like Lou Brown in Major League, you "had a hunch he was due."

On that same note, I must add the TWO, yes 2, occasions I have experienced when in my eagerness to get the game going, I hit ENTER to advance to the next play instead of pinch-hitting for a reliever that had just blown his save. In both cases, the reliever drove in the game-winning run. In one it was a solo-home run, in the other it was an RBI single.

Not only was the WIN unexpected, but WHO got the win!

Now, this has never happened to me, but what could be more sweet than the pitcher saving his win by a clutch at-bat?

I recently had a game like that. I was the home team down by 1 run in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs. I was able, due to a fielding error, to get runners to 2nd and 3rd. It was now or never. I brought in a pinch hitter, not even any one special, just someone so that my bad hitter didn't have to hit. I brought in one of my injured regulars, and he got a base hit to drive in the tying and winning runs. It was great.

Wrath,

Negative. I cannot remember exactly when I found him, but it was well before the movie came out.

I did it again.

Well, THEY did it. I managed the no-hitter game thrown by one of my pitchers in my fictional association. I just did it again with my Marlins replay. The funniest part is that I was rolling along and I ALMOST pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the 8th, planning on bringing in the closer in the top of the 9th. It was just then that I realized he hadn't allowed a hit! How sweet it is...

The best moment in my young 2007 replay association was as the Mets against the Nationals at Shea.  I was down 6-0 after 6 and being 2 hit (to add insult to injury).

I dropped an 8 spot on them in the home 7th (the stretch must have done my boys some good) and held on to win 8-6.  I must say, the reactive crowd is a very nice touch to the game.

In a 1901 draft league using real players and schedules my Reds had a wild game against the Phillies. Now, in 1901 there are some great pitchers around, but the staffs are very thin - the back end of the bullpens are literally bush-leaguers. One day my great starter, Vic Willis, got KO'd early, and the Phillies took a huge lead. Cincy scored 10 runs in the 7th to take the lead but by now the bullpen was shot and Crese Heismann coughed up 5 runs without getting an out to put us down 20-19. In desperation I went to Earl Moore, who was due to start in 2 days. He stopped the bleeding and the Reds scored a run to tie the game at 20. Then in the bottom of the 9th when Moore came to the plate, with no-one left to pitch I let him hit and he homered to win the game, 21-20! By then the Phillies pitcher was some-guy-hired-from-the-stands, but it was still sweet!

This association has teams playing in their franchises current ballparks from day one and the stats are not bad for the era - with some 110 games played the major-league leader has all of 12 homers.

Well, I didn't play PureSim yet, beccause it doesn't working, BUT I have some magic moments in other manager games: also no-hitter /1994/ & even perfect game /1996/ (both by Andy Ashby) in my 1993 dynasty with Colorado.
In 1999 we was down by 2 in World Series against Yankees - played third in New York. They lead 6-1 in ninth, but we came back with grand slam & solo shot, finally win it all in 16th inning (solo HR again).

I think everybody got something familiar - everybody, who don't simming. I played everything play-by-play. Uh yeah, we won that 1999 WS 4-3. [&o]
