AI tactical cheating?

Post by benpark »

I seem to notice the AI is able to use the leader rally even when they are inactive (black circles). Routed enemy units also seem to do things like retreat to within a leaders range, rather than toward the map edge. Am I imagining things, or does the AI get "breaks"?

The first issue you mention could be a bug. The 2nd issue is likely just luck for the AI.

The AI has some cheats, especially in General difficulty level, eg. in General difficulty Fog of War does not apply to the AI.

The AI in the strategic game receiving a bit of a bonus is understandable. It is however frustrating to see the enemy repeatedly come back from the dead with multiple leadership rallies (particularly given the state of Austria's field leadership at this time).

I would also look at the AI's movement rates. It seems that they can charge me after moving a few hexes. I seem to need to use all of my MP's to do the same. Again, maybe it's the defeat talking...

Once a few things are ironed out(and it at least feels like I am playing by the same rules as the computer), the game is going to be top notch.

I have also noticed how the enemy rallies when inactive. On the other hand I've had more than one general in the same battle and they seem to suffer no penalties.
I agree with the AI's movement rate as well. I have (I think) seen enemy units move and fire two times late into a battle when it should reasonably not be possible.
On the whole, a great, fun game and with some tweaking it can only get better.

I've been watching for that behavior where an AI unit would retreat toward a friendly leader instead of fleeing to the map edge. Some AI units aren't retreating when they should, giving enemy officers the ability to rally more than once.

Any idea if these fixes are to be fixed? ETA if so? It's shelved until then.

The game is not "dead" at all, sorry if you got that impression. We're working on investigating all issues reported here and any bugs will be fixed.

I notice that the cannons defeated on the Austrian side head for the side of the screen then stop. I used up all my Calv movement points and readyness in atacking the cannons and putting them in retreat. Everyone of them made a move back towards the Austrian leader(s) during the balance of the game and of course became active again. A couple of leaders made a run towards the side and reactivated a couple of cannons. They really like cannons. It was quite obvious when three or four white flagged units came back to the battle and within the circle. They did not keep heading toward the exit side of screen like my units.

I would suggest that you keep your cavalry close to the cannons and keep over-running them.  Cavalry that is able to charge cannons will always succeed in over-running them, and always capture one of the cannons.  Perhaps it's a bit of an exploit, but it's also a great way to acquire a lot of artillery for free. [;)]

Note also that your opponent can do the same thing to you, so be careful to pull your cannons back out of the line protect them whenever infantry or cavalry get close enough to be able to charge them.

Thanks for advice. I do keep my calvery as close to the cannons as possible and usually managed to wipe them out. How does one capture a cannon??? I would love to do this as I found the French under cannoned.

Thanks
Bob

How does one capture a cannon???

Hobo5:

Every time you charge and over-run an artilery unit you capture a cannon. The artillery unit will have one fewer cannon after the charge compared to what it had before the charge. That "missing" cannon is actually captured. After the battle look at the equipment you have available for reinforcement and building new units and you will see that those cannons are available to you. I help this is helpful.

I am still having a problem finding the captured equipment. My Strategic Overview Screen shows Replacements on one side and Reinforcements on the other. The later is a scheduled delivery at a town. I just completed a battle and (est) overran 25 batteries. I should have added 25 cannons -right. Where does this show up and how do I actually include the captured cannon or battery in one of my units?

The Reinforcement screen did not change to reflect any captured equipment after the battle mentioned above. I am sure that I just havn't read something or whatever but feel kind of stupid.

Hobo5:

The captured cannon should, in theory, show up as available cannon replacements in the replacements section on the left side of the Strategic Overview screen

That said, I haven't played the game in several weeks so I checked on some of my previous saved games. It seemed to me that there were many fewer captured cannon than I would have expected to have seen (only 2, after a battle where I had something like 6-10 over-runs). It's possible that I had already doled some of them out to units as replacements prior to the time that I made the save, but I'm wondering if there might be some game feature where not all cannons that are over-run are actually captured.

As I said, I haven't played the game in some weeks so I may be somewhat confused between how things works in "For Liberty", compared to how things work in "Napoleon in Italy". I sincerely apologize if I've given you any inaccurate information. I expect to be experimenting further with this in the next few days, so if I find out anything more I'll post it here.

Jeffery
Thanks for your response. I posted the questions under support and technical and hopefully will have the answer show up. I see you played for Liberty. I was going to download this game until I read the form and found the same AI cheating going on in this game. A number of people were asking when a fix or patch was coming. This is an older game and should be runing fine. It doesn't appear that anything is in the works. Needless to say I won't buy until they fix it. If I can't fix this capture thing then with all the A1 cheats and not realistic battles I am prepared to scrap this game as well.

As far as I can tell the capturing of guns works fine in "For Liberty". I don't know if it's been changed for "Napoleon in Italy", so it might be working as designed. In any case I hope it doesn't detract from your enjoyment of what is, in my opinion, a very good game.

I can't believe people are whinning about the AI when most AI's are a pushover anyways. So sad people can't use their noodles to figure out a way to beat the AI even if it does cheat from time to time or even all the time. Never seen so much QQing over AI power. lol Don't change a thing Hussar games peoples. If these newbs can't figure out a way to beat the AI they don't deserve to be able to beat it. Keep the game challenging and HARD even HARDER I say. ;)
WE/I WANT 1:1 or something even 1:2 death animations in the KOIOS PANZER COMMAND SERIES don't forget Erik! ;) and Floating Paratroopers We grew up with Minor, Marginal and Decisive victories why rock the boat with Marginal, Decisive and Legendary?

Thank you for the helpful suggestion. I shall try and catch up to some of you more experienced chaps. In the meantime maybe you can answer the question as to where the captured cannons go. How do you actually get them. Doesn't seem to work from the strategic screen.
I'll live with the A1 as for the most part it is better than others I have seen.
