UI Question - selection?

Post by MarkShot »

I am a little confused as to the right way to do this.

Goal: A hex contains two or more counters and I want to select a single counter which is not the default top one for some action like move.

It seems to me the way to do this is to right click to rotate the counters, and then left click when the one I want is on top. Is that the right way to do this? It works sometimes for me, but not always.

I have to say that the tabbed interface used in the AGE engine is much more intuitive. I should point out that such an enhancement could easily be done here by making the unit IDs in the bottom panel clickable/selectable objects. This would aid manipulation and give the added benefit of being able to select one or more counters.

The other thing which messes me up is when you try to exceed stacking limits. There doesn't appear to be any feedback as to the fact that you are attempting to violate a game rule.

Thanks.

Left-click selects the top counter, right-clicking cycles the stack.  There is no additional left-click required when the counter you want is on top.

As for over-stacking, the game does try to prevent you from over-stacking via regular movement by not providing a movement arrow into hexes the current unit won't fit into.

Thanks, Frank. I was probably doing erroneous left-clicks. Now, I and my mouse should be more nimble.

However, you may attempt to strategically move a unit into an overstacking situation; you are allowed to issue the order.

But if there isn't space there when strategic movement is resolved, your unit will remain in its starting location.

(Do I have this right?)
Any relationship between what I say and reality is purely coincidental.

In regards to over-stacking, its not strictly enforced because I believe you could fit far more men in the hex if you had to.

Yes but a previous suggestion was to limt teh nubmer of corps that can attack out of a hex, on hte basis that while a hex may have massive carrying capacity, a front line does not.

Right, no matter how many guys you have in a hex you're limited in the number of units you can use to attack from it by the stacking limit of the target hex.

I have to admit that I am now confused as to stack limitations of a hex:

There are four cases, I see of limits: Static, Ordered, Dynamic, and Resolution.

* Cases *

Static - when during the activation phase. Here a hex cannot exceed the published limits.

Ordered - Can you order more than the limit into a target hex from multiple hexes? Can you order more than the limit into a target hex if those counters in the hex already have orders to go someplace else?

Dynamic - What happens when due to WEGO movement stacking limits are exceeded? Are all the counters in motion allowed into the hex? Are all the counters allowed to participate in combat?

Resolution - What happens if counters must retreat and this forces hexes to exceed their limit? What happens if you are moving up counters on the presumption of a successful attack, but instead it fails?

* Other *

Does one need to count enemy counters in terms of considering limits?

Are limits ever temporarily reduced? Like is a hex ever considered to be pillaged/looted?

Is strategic movement ever impacted by stacking limits?

Thanks.

If an attack needs to conform to stacking limits of the target hex, then cannot a defender simply foil an attack by making sure that he has defending counters stacked up to hex' limit?

Thanks.

Its certainly a valid defence to fully stack your hexes.
Ordered - Can you order more than the limit into a target hex from multiple hexes? Can you order more than the limit into a target hex if those counters in the hex already have orders to go someplace else?

No.  Yes.
Dynamic - What happens when due to WEGO movement stacking limits are exceeded? Are all the counters in motion allowed into the hex? Are all the counters allowed to participate in combat?

Hexes are allowed to be overstacked so if due to WEGO a hex becomes overstacked then that's fine.  During the retreat phase the game will move units out of the hex if possible.  All units defending a hex may participate in the defence.  The penalty is that their density is higher and therefore will incur more casualties due to artillery fire.

Resolution - What happens if counters must retreat and this forces hexes to exceed their limit? What happens if you are moving up counters on the presumption of a successful attack, but instead it fails?

Nothing, the hex just becomes overstacked.  In the second case the hex will also become overstacked.
Does one need to count enemy counters in terms of considering limits?

No, stacking applies to each side separately.
Are limits ever temporarily reduced? Like is a hex ever considered to be pillaged/looted?

No
