pwhex file for eos

Post by 1EyedJacks »

Hi el sid again,

I went to http://www.rhs.akdreemer.com/rhs_files.htm to download RHS and EOS 075. Where is the Pwhex file at on this site? I didn't see it in the maps area - is there another location?

My bad - after searching around I found the pwhex file on the site...

I'm not familiar with the PANPW797.dat and RHSPW797.dat files; do these go in the root folder with the pwhex.dat file or somewhere else?

One is for Panama Closed scenario and the other for Panama Damaged, in case of a succesful Japanese Raid here

Never thought of it that way. Nor is it a good idea to play a "Panama closed scenario." Because in RHS ships appear at COLON - not Panama City. IF the Canal is closed, it matters - and in Level 5 and Level 6 they would NEVER reach PTO! In Level 7 they would have to take a longer route - forcing inefficiency on the Allies.

pwhex.dat is IDENTICAL with RHSPW.dat. The ONLY reason you get two copies is technical: the game requires the file you use be called pwhex.dat. So what if you change it? RHSPW lets you change it back.

PANPW is almost identical with pwhex.dat for any given level. The difference is coding of one hex side and the communications between Colon and Panama City.

The RHS rule is this:

IF Port Damage at Panama City reaches or exceeds 90%, the Canal (and the RR) is (are) damaged.

In that case, rename a COPY of PANPW as pwhex.dat and put in the top level WITP folder. This makes the hexside between them land - and no ships may pass. It also makes the RR a trail - grossly slowing traffic and logistic flow.

IF the PANPW version of the file is in use, AND IF Port damage at Panama City declines BELOW 10% (it MUST BE a one digit value), rename a COPY of RHSPW as pwhex.dat and put in the top level WITP folder. This makes the hexside between them both - and ships may pass. It also makes the RR into a RR again.

It is very hard to damage the Panama Canal. The Japanese target IRL was the Gatun Lock system - they even built a scale model for practice attacks and used it to work up a submarine aircraft attack in 1945 (at Nanao Bay). This attack had very little chance of success. The attempt was not made - the mission of the First Submarine Flotilla was changed to attack Ulithi Atol instead - and there was not sufficient time to get there before the war ended. A serious attack would require commitment of the Kiddo Butai - or theoretically the battlefleet in combination. ONLY IF the coast defenses were taken down might the battleships go home again. Maybe. The defenses of Panama were excessive - greater than were required for any reasonable attack - and it is in the game mainly to show anyone who wants to try just how hard it might be? It is also in RHS because I don't want the Allies to feel 100% "safe" - so they will leave some units to defend Panama. And if they don't - they diserve to get hurt.
