I'm getting the same error. Pops up right after the video intros. Can't get past it. Running XP with all updates. The software claimed to have installed normally.

Is this a 2.0 installation with 2.18 on top of it?

Please be sure that you have properly updated DirectX. Also be sure your video card drivers are up to date.

Is the installation of verison 2.0 the full version (166mb or something like that)? Or the update from version 1?

thanks

Hi.

Sorry you're having difficulty. WinXP is normally pretty stable when it comes to running the game.

A few things to check.

1. Do the utilties work? If they don't then something is preventing the game from installing the database components properly.

2. Are you installing the game using an XP administrator account? (likely yes but something to check)

3. Do you have the correct drivers for your video card?

4. Have you updated to the most recent version of directx?

5. You mentioned that you updated from 1 to 2, but how did you do this? If migrating from 1 to 2, you need to install the full version of the game.

6. Finally, try uninstalling the whole game, deleteing any folders, and installing version 2.0. Version 1 does not need to be on the computer to install version 2.0, if you're using the full installation.

thanks

ok, I uninstalled the game. manually got updated vid card drivers from the ATI site. rebooted, yadda yadda. Killed every extra app/service I thought might be causing the game to install properly. Installed the full 2.0 install. Installed the 2.18 update and now it works fine. yay!

Make sure you install all components
uninstall everything and delete the folder also

check what's running in the background try to kill any extra programs running in the background and try installing 2.18 after you install 2.0

Post you dxdiag file maybe one of your drivers needs to be updated

i have 4 versions running or loaded on the computer. all of them do this. each version is a different patch. i am trying to get all the league im in get to 2.18 but it hasn't happened yet.

My comuter is brand new gaming machine. so all drivers should be upto date i would hope. as the machine is 2 weeks old.

Hi.

That's probably why you're having difficulty. The game does not support multiple copies on one computer. The DBEngine.dll is a COM (ActiveX) component that registers itself with the OS. Once you install any version of the game, any existing versions will use the DBEngine.dll you just installed. Each version is specific to itself. Each update/patch is designed to replace existing versions. They're not designed to coexist.

Please try uninstalling all the copies of the game, deleting all folders, and just having one copy(the latest), in one path.

thanks

I had the same setup on my old computer and never had this trouble.

i have them in different folders under different headers. and it worked great.

But i will try to get down to one.
