PBEM - Fall Grün

Post by Arkady »

PBEM test game for my scenario Fall Grün

Germany : Arkady
Czechoslovakia: Matto

October 1st
Fall Grün (Case Green) was a German plan for an aggressive war against Czechoslovakia. The first draft of the plan was made in late 1937, with new versions coming as the military situation and requirements changed. The final version scheduled the attack to September 28, 1938, but as France and Great Britain were reluctant to go into war for the sake of Czechoslovakia and expressed political will to avoid it at all costs, the execution of the plan was postponed.

In this scenario, after the Munich Conference that took place on September 30, 1938, Czechoslovakia refused the Agreement signed by Britain, Francce, Germany and Italy.

Sudetenland Uprising!
Wehrmacht crossed borders of Czechoslovakia to "help" people of Sudetenland.
Can army of small country in Central Europe stop renewed military power of Germany ?
Is this a start of new All-European war ?

-----
There are three possible plans for German advance.

Original Wehrmacht plan - Press attacks from north and southwest, main thrust from Dresden along the river Elbe's valley to central Bohemia.

Plan proposed by general Halder - Bold strikes from south and north to Moravia, cut off retreat routes to Slovakia and then destroy surrounded forces in Bohemia

Führer's plan - Feint attack according to Halder's plan but main thrust from south west to Plzen (Pilsen) and to Praha (Prague). Quick capture of important factories of Skoda and CKD and capital city of Czechoslovakia

I decide follow the last plan with small change.
Feint attacks from north and north west to keep Czechoslovakian army in place
Main thrust accross Böhmerwald to Pilsen and from Wien to Bratislava and later turn north to avoid strong defence postions in southern Moravia.
Image

Turn 1
Battle started with feint attacks in area of Eighth Army.
8.ID and 31.ID made contact with enemy, requested air support broke through CAP and hit borders fortification. Concrete bunkers with sofisticated mutual cover, fire zones and road blocks stops the infantry attacks, artillery barrage was not strong enough to soften enemy. Infantry prepare for next day offensive.

Main thrust across Bavarian and Bohemian Forest is lead by three Jäger-Regimenter but despite air support and artillery barrage they were stopped by fortified positions

Only initial success belongs to 4.Leicht Division of generalmajor Alfred Ritter von Hubicki. Bridge to Bratislava was destroyed but his men covered approaches to Danube river and two Schutzen Regimenten by direct command of Oberstleutenant Walter Brehmer stormed the city.

To reinforce 14th Army I send XVI.AK (1.Panzer Division, 1.Leicht Division and SS-Inf.Regiment "L.A.H.") to Wien.

Losses

Czechoslovak Army countered with massive artillery bombardment on all fronts, 21st Division counter attacked and forced off german infantry from Bratislava
Image

Turn2
19.ID and 31.ID attacked from north with massive support, heavy fight and big lossess on both sides but german infantry prevail and captured important fortifications norteast of Opava (Troppau)

Units of VIII.AK (Second Army) deployed in wide formation but do not press hard on enemy
To hide our main attack routes, SS-Ing.Regiment and 103.Regiment/4.ID crossed Elbe river near Ustí (Aussig), this move is direct threat to several czech regiments as 32.Infatry Division captured Liberec (Reichenberg) by surprise

XIV.AK (Tenth Army) with engineer support quickly crossed borders and is within outskirts of Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad)
Other divisions of Tenth Army defeat first line of Czech defence south of Plzen and they are less than 50km to the city.

Advance to České Budějovice (Budweis) stalled, fortification and presence of 5th Infatry Division and 4th Fast Division need better preparation before full offensive can be started.

Recon shows that Czechoslovak High Command sends reserves to Bratislava, it is necessary to make breakthrough quickly. Luftwaffe leveled the city and big formation of five artillery regiments cover second crossing of Danube. 21st Division was badly mauled by concetrated attack of 44.ID and tanks of 4.Panzer Division
Engineers later constructed solid bridge to allow 1., 2. a 4.Panzer Divisions exploit success next turn, hopefully.

Situation at the end of my second turn

In the zoomed in screenshot of Bratislava where is the 21st division you refer to as having counterattacked?

I see no unit with that number to be able to identify it by.

What do the numbers on the units represent and how do you tell one "division" from another?

Please bear with my seemingly stupid questions as I do not own this game and am trying to use the forum to become familiar enough to decide if I want to own it.

Division numbers or better, unit names, are fully customizable by player
I can see enemy's unit names with good recon, so in my turn I see names of units in Bratislava (and as I'm creator of this scenario I know what units could attack me there [8D] )

The numbers on unit shows combat power (combination of strength, attack values, readiness and maybe experience)

But in that screenshot you apparently don't even see the names of your own units?

But in that screenshot you apparently don't even see the names of your own units?

When you click on the actual unit, you see at the bottom the units name.

For example, check this thread:

tm.asp?m=1514110

You will see at the bottom that Stavka HQ is selected, other units have their own names.

In the mods forum, youll also see the thread for this scenario and there is a section discussing OOB with screenshots of the divisions.

Which means that anyone folowing the AAR has no idea where the units are that are being referred to in the text description of the action and also means there is no way for a player to identify his own units when looking at the overall map and the big picture. Not very appealing.

Many people in this forum are touting the incredible flexibility of the game but it appears to lack the single most important aspect of flexibility.......that of having the name you assign to the unit appear on the unit counter on the map so it can be identified. Not to mention the lack of a unit size indicator. What size scale of units are we looking at here, divisions or regiments?

Only skirmishes with recon forces, except Bratislava.
Czechs gather 15th Inantry Division and 2nd Fast Division and after fierce fight they push me back.
----
Turn 3
I really need make some progress somewhere. I decide use my feint attack from the north and make it look more dangerous. Units of 31.Infantry Division captured Opava. 3.Panzer Division leave Breslau and will join attack next day.

VIII.AK tied a lot of forces of 34th Border District but difficult terrain and fortifications prevent it from further advance.

II.AK and namely SS-Inf.Reg. "Germania" used advantage of good positions from previous day and after aerial bombardment they defeated two regiments of 3rd Infantry Division. At least five regiments was encircled.
Image

17.ID occupied Karlovy Vary that was deserted by defenders, rest of XIV.AK chase enemy.
Tenth Army units fight in second line of defences, just front of Plzen. Road Plzen-Budějovice was cut across by 27.Infantry Division

On crucial axis Linz-Budějovice no progress was achieved. V.AK joined the battle there and right-hook strike is prepard for next day.

I find relatively weak spot north of Bratislava, other benefit from attacking there was possibility to destroy few artillery units.
Image

With standard procedure, air strike, artillery bombardment and at least three side attack I took fortifications.
Image

131.Infantry Regiment of 44.ID advanced to open terrain to force enemy retreat (or attack there). Three Jäger regiments should hold bridgehead against enemy counterattacks.
Image

My last minute attack to Bratislava without proper support was repulsed with heavy losses.
Total losses up to date.

Well, I really do not need know name of each particular counter/unit.
What I need to know is organization tie, to keep units from same division/corps/army (depends on scenario scale) together - here it is achived by color bars.

If I want to know name of the unit, I click it and see all stats below, not only name but compositon, supply level, readiness, entrenchment, experience, staff influence and connection, morale, transport capacity and weight etc.

Units in this scenario are regiments with few exceptions /recon battalions and some independent tank companies/

My goal with this scenario was achieve something similar to HPS's Panzer Campaigns in scale and play style, together with cover of what-if situation in 1938 (inspired by new czech historic-fiction book I'm reading now [:)] )

It's like TOAW in this respect.

Because the units function more like "containers" than units in the traditional sense, specific unit size is somewhat irrelevant. Think of them more like "battlegroups" than anything else. However, most scenarios will indicate that units represent one size, ie all units are divisions, or all units are corps....and yes, not very appealing.

Arkady, this is brilliant! Can't wait until you unleash this on the rest of us.

Hans, HPS's Panzer Campaigns and First Blitzkreig, undoubtably gorg type games, don't show unit ID's of strenght's unless you select a unit either. Have you played either of these? I own First Blitzkreig and it's about as grog as I can deal with anymore. With the editor it is possible to create a game with pieces with fixed values and unique symbols for each on.

I believe, and if I ever get any free time and motivation(read: stop being lazy), that I could make a true representation of Europa: The Fall of France. I'm already working on the map and have many ideas on how to create the units/OOB's.

If you are still un-sure, then wait for awhile to buy, it's not like they will run out... right Eric?[:D]. But I believe if you buy this in the end, you'll have a lot of fun with the user created scenarios that are sure to follow, like this one.

Edit: Arkady, sorry for de-railing your fine AAR. Please continue.

Heavy fights on southern front. 131.Infantry Regiment anihilated.
Image

Counter attack south of Budejovice and Czechoslovakia recaptured Opava.
SS-Inf.Regiment "Germania" stood firm and encirclement in northwestern Bohemia was not broken.

----
Turn 4
Troops defending Opava was reinforced. Fierce street fight was indecisive and only arrive of 3.Panzer Division save the day. Tanks rolled through streets, defenders did not retreat but was anihilated.

4.Infantry Division quickly defeated surrounded Czech forces in nortwestern Bohemia, retreat routes to the mountains was cut off by Luftlande Battalion "Gen. Göring".
After capture of Karlovy Vary previous day, enemy quickly retreating from western Bohemia. Light rear guard in Plzen was overrun and city was captured. Units of Tenth Army made contact with enemy and pursuit continue. Luftwaffe need relocate some groups to catch with quick advance.

V.AK begun right-hook strike east of road Linz-Budějovice. Luftwaffe was unsuccesfull against fortifications but artillery barrage pinned down defenders and infantry attack forced enemies to leave position. Losses grow.

Danube river is bigger obstacle than I expect, especially with skilled defender. To keep Czechs uncertain I renewed activity against Bratislava and after heavy fight, units of 1.Panzer and 1.Leicht Divisions entered the city. Engineers build pontoon bridge north of Bratislava to prepare for bridgehead expansion.
Image

Battle is in crucial phase, I build two new roads to western Bohemia to keep my units supplied

No enemy actions this turn except artillery bombardment. Run out of steam ?
----
Turn 5

Gap made previous day by tanks of 3.Panzer Divison was still open. I'm trying double envolopment manoeuver to encircle units west of Opava. East flank consist of 3.Panzer and 20.Infantry Divisions. Right Flank form only 23.Infantry Division. Unfortunately hard terrain and enemy resistence prevent connection of both jaws and one hex still connect defenders with rest of the forces. Near Ostrava threats me combined group of several units from 37th Border District and IV.Corps.

VIII.AK finally move to attack. All artillery regiments shelled designated "Schwerpunkt" and combat group from 8.ID and 18.ID charged enemy positions. Another attack follows and two holes in line was made. Two regiments was encircled.

All west and north-west Bohemia were deserted. New defense line is formed near Prague.
Vulnerable right flank forced Czechs retreat with some units from Budějovice north to Tábor and establish full defense line along Vltava (Moldau) river. Meanwhile Twelfth Army continue with right-hook strike and 9.ID captured another fortified position.

On Bratislava's front both bridgeheads connect after heavy fights, units of 1. and 4. Panzer Divisions encircled some armoured units but they will probably breakthrough and escape.
Czech High Command reserves arrive, few tank regiments.

Looks good.  Did not see the victory conditions.  Do the Czechs win if they hold out for a certain length of time?  Not sure if this covered elsewhere.
