Free as in Beer images

Post by dazoline II »

Hi,

Anyone have any good sites to get non copyrighted images of sub formations that can be released with a senario? For example I'm looking for items like single shots of a StuG IIIB or of combat engineers/pioneers in action, etc.

I like the SPWAW shots but it seems even though that game is "free" the images are copyrighted.

In strictly legal terms the copyright lies with the photographer, and no one else.

Something like a game company might option the right to use images, or be using them under "fair use"(lapsed copyright or anon photographer).

See this page for image usage details:

If you are doing a mod for "personal use" (and not for sale) that you run few legal risks.

Shots from WW2 should all be public now, it's like 65 years ago, isn't it ?

I'm sure all photographs from WWII are public domain now but images like the SPWAW ones are either scale model shots or drawn images. I should have specified a little more.

After some searching I came up with this site: WWII Drawings
It was mentioned on the SPWAW forums.

Well, this depend on law in each country. Creator's copyright is pemanent. But question is about usage copyright. For example in Czech Republic you can use photos for free for your own , non-profit, non-public use without creator(author) permission. You should mark it as a copy.
You should not share it and sold it. Photos can be used for free (without permission) for educational and illustrative purposes (again marked as a copy), of course only for non-profit use. After 70years after creator/author death, photos are public domain.

So I can use photos for my scenario freely, they are used for illustrative purposes and non-profit. I state in readme file for scenario that they are copies (there is no technical specification for "copy" marking...no big white letters accross image are needed [;)] )
