Formation editor & group speed?

It seems to me even if I have the group's speed set to flank that whenever I use the formation editor, the group's current speed is reset to cruise. Is it supposed to work that way?

Yes, because with every formation change each individual ship is changing speed and course as neccesary to meet your orders and slot into place therefore the full speed of the group is most likely not acheivable within this period. At least this is how I understand it to be. remember the groups overall speed is taken on the speed of the slowest ship in the formation.

Yep, also because after you use the formation editor, the game tries to give the ships an ability to maneuver into the positions within the formation you assigned to them, backing down from Flank allows some maneuvering speed.
