Upgrading.

Post by maxfra »

What units is usually best to upgrade before others? And to what level?
I think fighters would be a good choice (above all for the increased intercept range), but what else?
Airdefenses are good to improve at least to lev 3 to have increased radius...

I'm looking forward to reading your opinions.

Thanks.

Mhh, that´s a question of the battlefield of course and your strategy.
And with a not modified research cost multiplier (means normal research costs) you usually
won´t have the chance for that deep upgrades without getting a disadvanatge on the battlefield.

On a normal ground combat map i always prefer level II infantry and light tanks II or artillery II.
Often it will be useful to upgrade the fighters to keep air superiority or get it back.

You have to pick all the upgrades carefully since they are expensive (investing in light tank II upgrade = 20 light tanks on the battlefield)
and you have normally only limited PP´s.
To develop anything to level III or IV is mostly impossible. Except you focus on that upgrade to have later a real advantage (long term).
Short term you could come in trouble by doing this [;)]
Errm..., i talk about PBEM´s here not the AI....

I forgot: Of course flak III can be great, but that way i would only go when you´re in a absolute defensive
position against a enemy with superior air force.
The british player in "1939" can be often forced to go this way because of the strong german Luftwaffe
at scenario start. Fighting them with the few own planes (even upgraded) is a bad choice....

I like to upgrade fighters to level 2 early and higher later if nessesary. IMO I think in the long run the upgrade pays for itself if you gain air superiority.
You'll lose fewer fighters, which aren't cheap and lose fewer ground units to enemy air power. Seeing how the enemy air units are ussually targeting expensive ground units like tanks and arty's.
 IMHO.
