New game disk just installed, game map comes up, game won't start

[&:] Already wasted hours attempting to get stupid game going (after waiting 20 days for game to arrive). Game map comes up, but all interface icons fail to appear (no icons to the right of "Show Victory"), so I can't give any orders. The game read-me files mention installing latest version of Direct X file. Can that be the problem? Latest version is DirectX10 for Vista. Do I want that one? I am on a recently installed Athlon 3200+ with 1.5 gig of memory, and using a Radeon 9800 Pro. Can my system be the problem?

I have tried transferring DirectX9.c from another game (Sid Meir's Railroads) and I placed the Direct X as a seperate folder in the GOA folder! Not sure if that was the proper action.

Also tried running GOA Update Setup version 1.20, but it appeared as if it were reinstalling the entire game, so I aborted. Not sure if I did correct thing.

Any suggestions??

I assume you have clicked on the grey button with arrow "next" in the upper right corner ? If you have and the game is hanging it should state "busy" where the grey arrow button was located.

However, there is no grey button with a "next" arrow in the upper right corner of the map screen.[:(]

P.S.  I have version 1.2 of the game.  All the viewable buttons, which are those from "Show Control" to "Show Victory" are functional. 
 
I do get, between the game selection screen and the map screen, an information box that states: "Click the arrow button in the upper right to begin".  But, as earlier stated, no such button exists on my screen.

You should certainly install the latest update.

Well, I finally solved my problem. I compared the map you sent to my screen, and realized that, although our map sizes were similar, your word columns were smaller. It occured to me that my letter size might be the problem so I went into my Control Panel/Display/Settings/Advanced/General and checked my DPI settings. Sure enough, I had long ago set it to 120 dpi instead of the normal 96 in order to make the desktop icons and letters easier to see by my tired old eyes. This action expanded the "action" columns to the right - including showing the "forward" arrow.
