Possible to make space combat mod?

Possible to make space combat mod?
A divergence from what most people look for in here but I was looking for a game that I could mod into a space combat game. Any advice regarding this would be great.
Can I do the following to mod advanced tactics?
1. Create new tile sets (easy for my needs, black, maybe some planets..etc.)
2. Create new icons for ships and such.
3. Possible handle situations such as capturing/boarding?
In short, I am looking to recreate Federation and Empire
Thanks,
Brad

Yes it is possible. I am working on one--ever so slowly. Not Federation and Empire, just one of my own design.

Here is a sample of what I have so far. Still needs a lot of work. I have placed it on hold until after v 1.1 and the holidays.

Hey Brad,
I too was looking at trying to make a Fed & Emp game with AT! I think it is very possible. Let me know what you are up to and maybe we can combine our efforts.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body,
but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming "WOW, what a ride!"

Looks promising. A multiplayer space diplomacy game? Count me in.

cbelva,
That looks very nice and along the lines of what I was wanting to do.
My plane was to take various counters from the actually game and just scan them in and edit. I also have some of the larger MegaHex counters that have more colorful pictures.
Is there a way you can have the hex outlines still show up?
What is your feelings on sharing artwork?
Barthheart,
Working together is always better than doing it alone. I will warn that I am not looking to do something incredibly fancy. I am not going to make AI or anything as I will only be playing this with other friends. I am also not planning on putting in a bunch of constraints as I would expect my friends to follow the rules and since we all know them it will be easy to catch a cheater (and we do cheat at times . . . just not on purpose
)
My goal was to make a quick copy of the F&E map and basic supply setup. I am not concerned about battle rules because the plan is to use Starfleet COmmand Orion Pirates to determine the outcome of a battle.

bbarr97,
Sounds like a neat way to do things. I was going to use some counters out of a Cyberboard gamebox I have and make the map look like the original game map ... or maybe the Large Sacle Map... haven't desided yet. Individual ships would be the SFTypes so units would be fleets. Use PP as build points.
To make the hex lines show up just change the colour of the "hexraster.bmp" graphic.

bbarr97,
I don't have a problem sharing anything I have or done. In fact, putting our efforts together might be the best way to do this. I am not real big into space game. When I saw this program and the editor and realized the potentials, it begged to be tried. I have a lot of trial and effort up to now. I am confident it will do most of the things I want it to do.
I have built basically 6 classes of ships along with fighters. I have created colonists to hold and develop a planet, I have developed marines to explore and conquer planets. Beside two home worlds (I basically have only two regimes at this time) I have developed2 classes of planets (livable and dead). The livable planets can be developed and turned into production centers while the dead planets have minerals and can be "mined". The six classes of ships are: scouts (fast with lots of sensors, but lightly armed), destroyers (cheap with average speed and armaments), cruisers (the workhorse with upgraded armaments over the destroyer--also carries a small contingent of marines for exploration), battleships (heavierly armored with lots of weapons, can bombard planets, slow and shorter range than the other ships due to supply demands), carriers (should be clear enought), and finally transport. I am also working on a starbase system for command and control. Don't have all the bugs out yet. One other thing, I also added nebulae which can hide ships. I thought would add and extra diminsion to the combat.
Future plans--add additional regimes to include regimes controled exclusively by the ai. Add "monsters" like the doom day machine from Star Trek that can destory colonies on planets and the associated production. I also would like to "hide" technology on certain planets to be discovered by the different regimes (example would be upgraded sensors, carrier technology, etc). I have done a little experimenting with the events and believe it can be done.
Right now I need to design my map. I am going to start with a map that is 100x100. I would like to expand this as I add regimes later. Basically I am designing this by trial and error. I have a basic play (outlined above) and implementing as go along. I have little time, so my work comes in spurts.
Again, I will be glad to help in anyway that I can. I am not looking for credit. I started this project just for fun. I figured if I ever got it to a decent point, I would release it. If anything I have done anything that can help you, let me know.

cbelva,
Sounds impressive what you have done so far. My first step now is to buy the game. I have been nervous about spending that much money but now it sounds like what I need so it might be worth it. I am going to dig up some of my counters and start scanning them in tonight to have the pictures ready. Might have to wait till next payday to purchase the game though. It is rather costly . . .

lol. That would be a good first step toward creating your scenario [:D]

Here are some more pixs from my scenario. You will note that I am not much of an artist. [:(]

Those don't look bad at all. Great background and better than traditional strategy symbols of squares with dots.
I wasn't planning on making anything that good.
