Bug in v1.10k

Post by Bombur »

"Surface vessels" and "Non fighters" strings disappeared from the detailed combat statistics spreadsheet (altought the statistics ARE THERE). The trouble seem to be related to string size as the names appeared again after I changed them to "ships" and "other air". This has no effect on game but is annoying for scenario designers, particularly if we want to include extra SF groups.

I have the exact same problem and I have a couple more sf groups there, I thought that was the reason.

I'm makig a proper WWII-specific unit collection. I'm not so interested in scenarios at this point. I played random games for some time till I realised I just don't feel comfortable with the default abstract units so that's my proirity for now. I have a pretty good German list already, almost all major vehicles, now I'm adding some Soviet stuff. Finding proper pictures of everything is the bigger problem :) Also balance will be tough.

Great work. I suggest you to find images in a google search ( typing the equipment you want to create and selecting images in the menu). I´m working in a similar project but up to now I have only graphics for Spanish Civil war. If you want, we can work together in a unified graphic directory (in order to spare HD space for other modders). I´m using JPEG graphics as they eat less HD than PNG ones.

:) of course I use google extensively, the thing is for some more obscure vehicles it takes a lot of browsing to find a decent image. I have even used some images of models which I've judged realistic enough that with a bit of photoshopping they fit with the other pics.

That's a good point about JPG, I just used PNG by default but I'll re-save them. A unified directory is also a good idea but I first have to organize mine as they're just spread all over the place :)

Let me think what I have so far, I'll only list the images I've added:

SdKfz 222
Pz I
Pz III E
Pz III G
Pz III L
Pz III N
Pz IV D
Pz IV G
Pz IV J
Panther
3,7cm FlaK 36
7,5cm PaK 40
PzJgr I
Marder (I've used a Marder III pic I think)
Hetzer
Jagdpanzer IV L/70
Jagdpanther (the stock pic sucks IMO)
Wespe
Hummel
10,5cm leFH 18
15cm sFH 18
17cm K 18
7,5cm leIG 18
15cm sIG 33
Sturmpanzer I
Grille
Sturmpanzer IV
StuG III D
StuG III G
SdKfz 250/9
SdKfz 251/1
SdKfz 7/2

FW189
Me-109G
Me-109K
Me-262

Soviet:

45mm M37
76,2mm F-22
76,2mm regimental gun M27
122mm A-19
122mm M30
152mm D-1
152mm ML-20
T-26
T-28
T-34 M40
T-34 M41
T-34 M43
T-34/85
KV-1 M39
KV-1 M42
IS-2
BA-10
BA-11
BA-64

By far not a full list but I'm adding new stuff every day. At some point I'll probably release the master file for anyone who wants to use WWII units instead of the default abstractions.

Might not be very soon. Just thought I'll show a sample of what I'm doing.

This will be a huge improvement of the game! I hope Vic will consider adding this to the stock game in future releases.

Here's a link to some aircraft side art: http://avia-hobby.ru/mb/paint.html. May be useful.
I also use this site a lot for AAR's etc: http://www.ww2incolor.com/. You can most likely find some useful stuff there as well, but maybe more for events?

What are your main focus areas/countries for the work? I understood you had Spain, Germany and the Soviet Union? Would it be of use to share the data for the different entries in order for other data crunchers to "stay in balance" when adding new countries and equipment?

Great work. From what I understand, you´re working in a masterfile, correct?

That's right, I took the "RealMod" masterfile for the terrain graphics and from there on added many new units by using SFType copy. For example I'd copy the medium tank, then change the name, graphics, desc. and all other variables I think need to be changed. I have also spent some time balancing some units (KV vs Tiger for example) but it's a very serious matter that will probably require other experienced people's help.

Hi T_K

When you make new units, you might want to test them with combat sim mode.  It basically runs a combat 200 times and reports average results.  This is a good way to make sure units are performing as desired.

Yeah I've tried the sim mode.

Some eye candy here. I've spend long hours finding and prepping all the images.

-Balancing units could be tricking. I´m having some troubles in doing this in my scenario. But to what extent is this so important? My guess is that these values should be scenario specific. Take for instance, fast bombers, like the SB-2, the Battle or the Do-17). They should receive some bonus for pre 1939 scenarios because their high speed allows the to evade from enemy fighters (I use hit points, seille suggested to place them in a special category of bombers, less vulnerable to fighters). However, for post 1939 scenarios their speed isn´t of much help because there are much faster fighters, and they must "pay the price" for their relatively high speed (no armor or self sealing tanks) so they become actually less useful than slower, but better protected planes. Another point I would suggest you would be not to edit upgrades. As there are too much equipment and only 4 possible upgrade levels, this could make things a bit confused.

I'm setting up upgrades like this - the Soviets start with a T-28 medium tank and that can be upgraded to T-34 M40 to M41 to M43 to T-34/85. So basically at any given moment you have only one medium tank. I don't think that will be all that confusing.
