Is there any interest in tweaking this scenerio to deal with the problem of early Soviet pullback to the Smolensk area to build fortified line 2 or 3 hexes deep that runs both north and south for most of the front and results in a WW1 like standoff with Axis having little or no chance to break through. It seems a little unrealistic that Soviets could put together such a massive construction effort in the midst of a blitzkreig attack especially given total axis air superiority.Perhaps some limitation to hex defense improvement would help or needing the presence of engineer unit to improve hex is in order. At present its theorioretically possible to fortify every hex on the map if you have the time. I dont know-what do you guys think?

Try the Buzz mod. It's pretty good. One very easy trick to limit Soviet pullback is limiting their rail capacity. In earlier versions the reconstitution point was in Siberia, which also made it much harder for soviets(could take 2 turns to ship those units somewhere...now just 1 anywhere)
