Named Pilot list

Post by TheElf »

Below is a form for fourmites to enter in pilots that should be in the game. This is a "fun exercise" meant to give you all a chance to improve AE in some small way. Copy the form below and use it in your application. You may include more than one pilot in your post. PLEASE do a little research before you post. Don't limit to fighter pilots.

No application missing info will be accepted.
Please keep to actual pilots. If they were actual and a family member please note that.
Serious replies only. No debates, just quote the previous post on the same pilot and enter your values in the fields in italics with a star to notate changes. If a discussion is necessary take it somewhere else. Ultimately we will assign the values anyway.

On map Dec 7?: N

Ace: Y
If ace, # kills: 5
Leader values: hIGH AGGRESSION
What are values based on? What was he known for?: Reginald 'Butch' Gordon was the only RAAF pilot to become an ace in the SW Pacific theatre.  He spent much of the early war as an instructor before arriving on 31 Sqn in August 1943.  He led the sqn on long range armed recce flights over the Timor area.  His Beaufighter was damaged in a combat with a Japanese 'Nick' and hit over 100 times resulting in a failed engine and a two hour flight home ending in a crash landing.  In part due to his aggressive leadership of the squadron he was awarded the DFC and bar.

His DFC was earned for his leadership and aggression despite the fact that the Beaufighter had only enough fuel for 15-20 minutes of combat over the target area, hence the high aggression.
His pilot experience (IMO) should be higher than average due to his time as an instructor.

What are values based on? What was he known for?: Taken directly from his VC award

On 9th December, 1941, all available aircraft from the Royal Air Force Station, Butterworth, Malaya, were ordered to make a daylight attack on the advanced operational base of the Japanese Air Force at Singora, Thailand. From this (base, the enemy fighter squadrons were supporting the landing operations.
The aircraft detailed for the sortie were on the point of taking off when the enemy made a combined dive-bombing and low level machine-gun attack on the airfield. All our aircraft were destroyed or damaged with the exception of the Blenheim piloted by Squadron Leader Scarf. This aircraft had become airborne a few seconds before the attack started.
Squadron Leader Scarf circled the airfield and witnessed the disaster. It would have been reasonable had he abandoned the projected operation which was intended to be a formation sortie. He decided, however, to press on to Singora in his single aircraft. Although he knew that this individual action could not inflict much material damage on the enemy, he, nevertheless, appreciated the moral effect which it would have on the remainder of the squadron, who were helplessly watching their aircraft burning on the ground.
Squadron Leader Scarf completed his attack successfully. The opposition over the target was severe and included attacks by a considerable number of enemy fighters. In the course of these encounters, Squadron Leader Scarf was mortally wounded.  The enemy continued to engage him in a running fight, which lasted until he had regained the Malayan border. Squadron Leader Scarf fought a brilliant evasive action in a valiant attempt to return to his base. Although he displayed the utmost gallantry and determination, he was, owing to his wounds, unable to accomplish this. He made a successful forced-landing at Alor Star without causing any injury to his crew. He was received into hospital as soon as possible, but died shortly after admission.
Squadron Leader Scarf displayed supreme heroism in the face of tremendous odds and his splendid example of self-sacrifice will long be remembered.

He is in game, but as an only Pole in theatre, i think i should give some info about him"

Name: Witold Urbanowicz
Rank: Colonel (Polish Air Forces), Wing Commander (RAF)
Service/Nation: Polish Air Forces, on loan to USAAF
Type: fighters (P-40N)
Unit: 16th FS (shortly) -> 74th FS (shortly) -> 75th FS
On map Dec 7?: N (available from Sept 1943)
Overall EXP: very high - he was serving many times as an instructor.
Ace: Y
If ace, # kills: 17 (2 of them in China) + 1 probable (+1 before war)
Leader values: brilliant

What are values based on? What was he known for?:
* His first air victory was before war, he shot Soviet recon plane in Polish airspace
* He tried to took justice in his own hands when Willy Messerschmitt himself was caught spying during airshows in Poland. Later he often told, that war in air would be much easier if his collegues had let him finish his job with Messerschmitt.
* He criticised his superiors for silencing that case of espionage, and afterwards was grounded and relegated to work as instructor in military flight school.
* One and only time when his plane was hit by a bullet was at 1 Sep 1939 when he excercised combat with one of his students. After landing he was upset thinking that his student had real ammo. He was shocked when was told that war has started and those bullets were from German plane!
* When war broke out, he returned to active fying. Escaped to UK - serving in 145th Sq RAF. Then he become commander of 303rd (Polish) Sq RAF. This squadron under his command became highest scoring one from all allied squadrons during Battle of England. Later he commanded 1st Polish Fighter Wing. He was not liked by his Polish superiors, he received both commands only after request from RAF.
* Finally his superiors managed to get rid of him in July 1942, he was moved to basic(!) flying school, and later he was sent far away to Washington to become an attache in embassy.
* He met Chennault personally and convinced him to give permission to voluntarily join 14th Airforce.
* He was easily recognizable as he wore teel-gray Polish airforce uniform.
* He claimed over 20 air victories in China alone, but he thought that arguing about numbers is irrevelant from historic point of view.
* Two confirmed air victories he get, when he was flying alone and was surprised by six Ki-43.
* He came back to Europe with hopes of flying during Normandy invasion, but superiors put him behind the desk
* When he was in China, in US his child was born. He asked about sex of child using telegrammes of highest diplomatic priority (technically he was still Polish attache in Washington!)

Fate IRL: After the war came back to Poland, but soon had to flee. He went to USA where worked as production control executive (whatever that means) in American Airlines, Eastern Arlines and Republic Aviation. Retired 1973. In 1995 Promoted to Brigade General. Died in New York in 1996.
