cant find multiplayer games

my CCMT is not finding multiplayer games when i search for them.

I tried to play an internet multiplayer game and CCMT crashed to desktop the first time when i pressed the enter button after typing in the correct ip address.

when i tried again it did not find any games hosted by my friend.

so i connected up my laptop and pc with one network cable and tried again. after failing repeatedly to find the hosted game i gave up.
but other games ik have work on multiplayer and the firewall is set to allow CCMT

did the network cable run through a router so you needed 2 network cables?

I tried again today. I connected my laptop and my Pc using one network cable and no router

1. Tried multiplayer - the Laptop did the hosting. The desktop found the game (as soon as the multiplayer screen appeared). Tried to join the game. Failed - The screen froze for about a minute the the "search for games" bar appeared. Tried again and froze computer, had to pull out plug.

2. Hosted game on the desktop. Laptop did not find the game even after i entered the ip address of the PC.
