I would like to think he acquired them from a game of poker, but in that environment, they would be warmth at altitude, and keep scorpions away on the ground.
Besides, cannot hit rudder bar pedals and brakes too well in your bare feet!

m10bob, yes, I guess pilots need these boots when they fly. But why in the world he thought he should be using a "summer uniform" along with these boots is a mystery to me.
