Operation Taifun (Typhoon), Objective Moscow

Post by Mobius »

German forces in Operation Typhoon where to drive on Moscow from the south. Their route took them to Orel. From there they were advance to Mcensk. A series of sharp battles took place in the villages and woods between the two cities. Voin was one of these villages. It was from the description of this battle by Guderian that began the belief of the invincibility of the T-34.

The Soviet forces remain hidden as German units prepare to push through the scattered houses of Voin.

Soviet Cadets from the Tula Artillery school man an F-22 field gun. While a powerful weapon it needed two gunners to operate, one each to adjust the vertical and horizontal controls, slowing its rate of fire.

Flak 88m guns target any soviet gun or tank that opens up on German forces. The yellow rubber band indicates an enemy gun too is trained on the Flak.
This gun has no problem with efficiency and its high rate of fire can kill 2 or even three tanks in a single phase.

Soviet T-34s are laying in wait for the German panzers. As the Germans get closer the Soviets pounce. The lighter guns of the panzers are marginally effective to the good sloped armour of the T-34s. The Germans pulled back to the cover of their heavy Flak guns.

One of the guns unique to PCK is the s 10cm K18 105mm field gun. This was a very powerful weapon. One of these helped stop the Soviet T-34 counter-attack. In the lower image is a binocular view from the field gun.

Alas the first wave of T-34s was stopped. But a second echelon, this time of KV tanks, has been seen slowly advancing behind a smoke screen.

For sure. Late 1941 the Germans pressed everything they could lay their hands on to try to stop the Russian tanks. They used captured French and Polish 75mm guns. Captured F-22 Russian guns were one of their favorites as they were more effective against the T-34 than the Pak guns of the time.
