General research

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

General research

Post by toddtreadway »

What would people think about some sort of "general" research categories, such as speed, evasion, ground attack, etc., that would permit you to research in those areas, with later benefits of decreasing research costs in those areas for all units?

E.g., spend 6 points in speed, then it costs 1 point less to increase speed for individual units. The world standard could be low (say 0 or 1) so that it would get very expensive to increase levels in a dramatic way.

Personally, I've always kind of liked the idea of something like this. E.g. techniques that enhance the range of CAGs can also enhance the range of fighters.

But I think it would be very difficult and not worth the effort at this point to try to retrofit such a thing in a good way.

Would it be possible to link CAG speed to fighters using the same mechanism as that used to link Para scores to infantry without linking in the other attributes?

For aircraft, it would be interesting if speed and defensive improvements gave some percentage chance at improving the attributes of the other aircraft platforms as well. Sealing fuel tanks come to mind. Even though you may have developed them for fighter survivability they may have utility in bombers and other aircraft as well.
