How about a pitcher warm up feature?

Post by renojedi »

I will admit that I don't read every post on this board but it seems like when features are asked for, this never comes into account. I used to love this feature in the console games because you actually have to plan who to warm up and when. So if they are not warm and they come in, they get bombed. If they warm up too long, they get tired. It was a neat little thing that not only added realism but made for another component of the strategy.

After reading KG's primer for when to change a pitcher in a game this came to mind. Anyone else havew any thoughts on this?

I have 2 MLB games: Puresim and MVP Baseball 2005; the former for REAL and DEEP immersion and the latter for when I get the desire to play a more arcade-style of gaming. MVP has a pitcher warmup feature and I must say that I love it. It adds not only another bit of realism, but it also adds another challenge- WHO do you warm up? What happens if you forget them and they get tired just warming up? etc. I would love to have a bullpen with a pair of hurlers warming up, one for lefties and one for righties, or two righties, or whatever combo I call for. There's only one thing that holds me back from saying YES! PUT THIS IN!

Matchups.

Perhaps I'm blind, but in all the countless, countless games I have managed in Puresim I can tell you that I have never, ever, ever seen a noticeable difference between handedness; regardless whether you're talking about hitting or pitching. I've seen lefty pitchers with GREAT numbers against right-handed batters while at the same time performing like crap against left-handed hitters. Conversely, right-handed pitchers would can't throw a fit much less a strike against right handed hitters, but are flawless against left-handed hitters. Call me crazy, but I have not seen a genuine presence of handedness in Puresim.

Because of this, it doesn't matter who you'd warm up. If it doesn't matter who you warm up, why bother?

Thanks for mentioning me, renojedi, but we've discussed having a warmup feature before.

Doing this would require tiredness to be monitored for not just the pitchers in the game, but perhaps four more (in the bullpen). I don't think Shaun's ever mentioned it, but it wouldn't surprise me if all RPs END ratings already have a "warmup penalty" built in.

It would also require more screen text, to display "Warming up:", perhaps for both teams. Where would you put this message? We're already dangerously close to "text clutter" as it is.

FS mentioned handedness, which fully deserves to be discussed on its own.

I always thought that having a pitcher get tired from warming up too long was just silly.  Like my pitching coach is out there cracking a whip making him throw too long.  Pitchers are generally smart guys, they know when they're warm, this is why you'll see them stop throwing and stand by the fence waiting when they get the kinks worked out.  They don't just mindlessly keep throwing regardless of the situation on the field.

As a game by game palyer I think this would be a great idea. It would add one more bit of realism to the game. This is one area where I found PureSim to be not much of a challenge. At anytime you can just pop in a new pitcher with no wait time. In real life it does take a bit of planning to get the relief pitcher ready. It adds a little bit more drama when you know your guy out there is tiring and you need to get that relief pitcher warmed up before your guy gets into trouble.

I don't think a pitcher would get a penalty for warming up too long in a game, unless you left them out there for more than an inning or two.

My thinking is the penalty would really be warming up a pitcher every day, whether or not you brought them in. That might tire them out. Not as fast as game action, but a little every time.
