Spring Training

So I've had mixed results with spring training and determining where players should be prior to spring training.

Have you found that it matters (for improving or maintaining players' ratings) where the player is prior to spring training? Or is it only important where they spent the previous year? For instance...if you think a player is ready to be called up this year, should you put in in the majors prior to spring training? Or does it only matter that he was in the right level last year with potentially a late season call-up?

Thoughts? I've seen varying results doing either way.
