Is there a way to modified leader casualties so instead of leaders dieing they are just out for 6 months?

No, if you play with leader casulty, it is just like the boardgame option.
Rolled for each leader parcipation in a combat.
die roll of 6. Leader is "wounded",
If roll another die for level. on rolls of (1-5, out 5 months), 6 dead.

Dont know if game edito they are developing would change that.

No, leader casualites are 1 in 36 in v1.01, then a die roll again for wounded or dead.  Works out to be a leader death every 216 combats on average.
