A little OT: Billy Crystal, Rookie of the Year?

Post by GNDN »

As you may or may not be aware, Billy Crystal (yes, the comedian) signed a one day minor leauge deal and is playing against the Pirates today. Mike and Mike on ESPN radio talked about this and how some are accusing the Yankees of making a mockery of the game. (The true mockery was the Yankees/Devil Rays incident, but I digress).

The hosts did not seem to have a problem with it citing that Michael Jordan, Garth Brooks and Tom Selleck have all taken parts in spring training (or more in some cases).

I am kind of curious as to what others on this board think.

As for me, it does not matter. I know he is a big baseball fan (as are the others mentioned above) and have no issue with him living a dream.

Thoughts? Rants? Raves?

I think it's a good publicity move. Crystal will be wearing number 60, to celebrate his upcoming birthday. When asked what position he would play, he quipped "DH -- Designated Hebrew." [:D]

I am a Met fan, but  think this is great idea.
Billy is batting "leadoff" today, and I do not want to miss it.

I like Billy, but if I were a Pirate pitcher, I'd have to buzz him inside on the first pitch, then hit the outside corner for strikes 1, 2, & 3.

On second thought, If I were a Pirate pitcher, I doubt I could hit a spot for four straight pitches. Hell, Crystal might even get a hit off one of those clowns.

Well, he went to 3-1 and than struck out swinging at two 88 mph fastballs.  He did foul one off.

Can you imagine the pitcher at 3-1?  Oh my God, I am going to walk a 60 year old man, this is not how I wanted to get on SportsCenter....

Too bad Billy will never be listed in the Lahman database, but I'm sure his name will come up in baseball forums all over the country today. Pretty cool, huh?

Sorta like Pros v. Joes except the Joe is older than the Pro for once.
