Torpedo Acquisition

Post by miller7219 »

Hi. What exactly is the "Acquisition" field for torpedo weapon types? If an active/passive torpedo can detect targets at ay 6 nms, what would the value be for the "Acquisition" field?

Torpedo acquisition is currently measured in DUs. What is a DU...a distance unit, which is equal to 6211 DU per nuatical mile.

So for your example, the acquistion range would be 6211 * 6 = 37266. Now you might consider trimming that down some, otherwise your torpedo might turn out to be too effective, but that is an editor's choice.

So... a DU is about 1 foot?

I didn't realize range was calculated that closely. [X(]

Yesterday, I discovered an error with the torpedo acquisition ranges I had calculated in the HCDB. They should be greater by a factor of 10. My bad, will be remedied immediately, and an update to the DB will probably be posted for download later this evening. No wonder you folks couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with your torpedoes. Hehe, the updated DB went up yesterday evening. Get it at HarpGamer in the Downloads section.

Please note that this doesn't change recommended torpedo tactics. You should still be dropping those torpedoes as close to the target as possible, but you should see an improvement in hit probability because the torpedoes aren't quite as "near sighted". [;)]

Brad...does the 6211 * (Range in nms) = acquisition formula still apply? You mentioned a scaling by a factor of 10 problem above.
