How To Guides/ Step By Step

Post by GFeros »

Can someone work on a How To Guide with a Step by Step for things like:

1) Creating Uniforms
2) Stadiums

I feel it would make it alot easier for those of us that are not familiar with the process of doing some of these things. I have learned as I go and it becomes fairly easy but can get a liitle confusing sometimes. Any help appreciated.

If you go to the "Graphics Related" sub-forum, you'll find this post pointing to a uniform tutorial.

Yeah, there is a uniform tutorial I believe but a tutorial on editing stadiums would be helpful. I notice Old coach has been changing the crowd color on his stadiums I'd like to learn how to do that.

Editing the crowd colors isnt hard. Download the stadiums zip from here
http://www.geocities.com/gary_l_sorrell/misc/Stadiums.zip
It has a number of the custom stadiums that were on FBMAX. NONE of these were done by me.

Anyway, there are 5 or 6 bmp files in each folder that are the crowd. It would be a bit tedious, but you could recolor as many of their shirts as you want.

Also, drop copies of these files in your default stadium folders and they should show.
They only apply to Stadium1, Arena, and Eastern Stadium

You probably need to find a 3d viewer that can view Direct X files
so you can view the stadiums without constantly starting up the game.

You can try deep exploration from right hemisphere the free trial lets you view the stadiums.  It only has a 30 day trial tho

Ok, I'm going to ask a REAL dumb question here re: uniform editing because I guess I have nothing to lose.  Bassman's tutorial is very helpful but it does assume I already have a pretty good grasp of PSP, which I do not.  I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to work with Layers and to edit textures in general.  I am wondering if anyone has a few relatively simple tips they can pass along for someone like me who is not a graphic designer and would simply like to change a color here and there when textures are involved.  A good example is with pants (u0 or u1 file).  They include textures for the knee and thigh pads and I want to simply lighten, darken, or slightly alter the entire thing but still maintain the textures.  So obviously I cannot just click on the paint bucket and do it that way.  I assume this is where working with layers comes in and I need a simple tip on how to do that.  I do have a trial version of PSP that will expire soon, but I also have a couple of the free programs installed: Paint.NET and GIMP.  ANY help or suggestions by anyone would be greatly appreciated.  [:)]

Thanks all!

Hi Lee,

Here are some things that may help you out. I am speaking from PaintShopPro perspect (I use version 8 - but it is likely very similar to the demo you are using).

To begin with, there is likely a little panel on the left hand side of the screen that has the layer info (when indeed you have a layered item (like the UO and U1 PSP or PDP template)). Grab it and move it towards the top of the screen so it stretches out horizontally and you can see all the layered information. It is far easier to manipulate things this way:

Now play around with it and see what you can do. This is how I learnt a couple of years back. If you click on the "eye" it makes the layer invisible. If you move the slider beside the eye from right to left, it increases the transparency of the layer (P.S. You are going to want to make the "multiply texture 1" and "overlay texture 1" more transparent if you want to soften the pad lines like you mention). By moving the cursor over the layer name, a little image will appear indicating what that particular layer looks like. By clicking on the layer name (highlighting it), you can now manipulate the individual layer. Play around with the "normal, multiply, overlay, darken, dissolve", etc. settings to the right of the transparency slider so you get a feel for what each does. To simply change the colour of the pants, select the base colour layer and fill it in with whatever colour you wish.

Anyways, play around a bit...sorry if this is on the brief side, but I have to run.

Hopefully it helped.

leeman67, I'm glad that my tutorial has inspired you and others to make your own uniforms.

I have a few tips. The internet is a great resource for information. Use Google or another search engine. Search on "psp tutorial" (with the quotes), "psp help", "psp tips". Or substitute 'paint shop pro' or 'photoshop' or 'gimp' for 'psp'. These searches will find hundreds of useful sites. Bookmark these sites immediately and go back to them after you've bookmarked a bunch. PSP users will find that Photoshop sites are useful and vice versa.

Forums for the various programs can be useful. http://www.pspug.org/ is a good resource for PSP. Paint.net, GIMP, Irfanview and of course Photoshop all have forum sites.

Books are also good. I used "Teach yourself Paint Shop Pro 7 in 24 Hours" by SAMS. I've also kept my books from JASC for PSP7 and PSP9. Unfortunately Corel no longer prints a book but a PDF file is included in the C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2\Languages\EN folder (if you have X2, that is).

As redwolf1 said, you have to play around with the tools and features. Practice on a copy of the template. Experiment with a few tools every day and you will eventually learn your graphic program. Use the HELP menu also. There are many tools in PSP that I've haven't used yet and I've used PSP since version 5.

Lastly, ask questions here. Forum members have been willing to help and share information.

Bassman58,

Thank you and also to Redwolf.  That helps me greatly and I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.  I'll play around with it using Redwolf's suggestions and see where it goes.

Thanks again!  [:)]
