I've often thought this about people who were "disagreeable" with me. That they had a disorder of the mind. haha

I especially like this quote:
“Our research supports the idea that people who are heavily involved in game playing may be nearer to autistic spectrum disorders than people who have no interest in gaming.”

No I'm saying YOU are. :) I don't play games much anymore (they've all become sort of boring since there's nothing really new out there). I know some though that have to play everyday every free minute of their free time etc. etc. though. Are you like that? Cmon yessssss you are, admit it...oh wait another sign is denial that one has a problem....you're not denying it are you? haha

“The thinking in the field is that there is a scale along which people, even those considered to be‘normal’, can be placed upon. And that people such as engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists are nearer to the non-empathising, systemising, end of the spectrum, with people with Aspergers syndrome even further along again...."

Great, an Engineer who plays games is even worse off on the scale.

Are you Jeffrey ?
Because I am. I can somewhat agree. And I know a couple of people who are worst on the scale than myself.

Of course most people in my working environment are not gamers and are then "sane". [;)]
And there is that person of exception who shows the most empathy and socializing capabilities while being an engineer, an avid gamer, a wargamer and a Tolkien/Lovecraft fan. He is the one who convinced me to buy Steel Panther and re-read (and finish) Tolkien and Lovecraft. Of course he is not a "computer gamer" but mostly a boardgamer. That may explain this anomaly.

RH,

I am an Aspy, and my son has recently been diagnosed with autism, but you know what. I take it as a compliment.

Without ASD the human race would still be living in a cave. Sure probably throwing a party, but freezing cold as nobody would have invented fire yet!

It is not a "disorder of the mind"! I see it as a wonderful quirk of the mind, in which some cortical "socializing" neuronal real-estate has been traded for an improved "mathematical/logical/natural insight/attention to detail" capability.

For all the really great human achievements, I think you will find someone with ASD was behind them. That probably includes the arts as well.

Actually the reason why you are typing on your computer and we are having this conversation at all, is thanks to a long line of Aspys [:D]

Lol Stridor it's no big deal to me really. My whole life I have observed that everything we do that we enjoy and in abundance is either a disease, a condition or a sin. ;)

I would argue that most academics (of which I am one) are closer on the spectrum towards Aspergers and Autism than the "normal." There is a certain sort of social dysfunction, obsessive-compulsive, detail-oriented, concrete sequential personality that many people in high academia share. The question to ask is, is their personality why they entered the field, or does entering the field alter their personality to fit this mold?

What I do find abborant about this study is the idea that there is some mean "normal" that certain people fit into on this "Autism" spectrum. The idea of a perfect normal is a lie, one that needs to be destroyed. I also diasgree that there is one coherent disorder called "Autism." Instead, I believe that it is a catch-all term to lump different personality traits that create various level of creative thinking or problems socializing. The idea of a spectrum may help, but I still think it belies a greater complexity of personalities.

And RH, you KNOW you fit the model very well, so no pontificating that it is always the "other guy." I have hardly seen another person who views things so black/white than you, has certain eccentric ways of thinking, offers creative viewpoints on obscure items, or holds intimate knowledge of esoteric subjects. If these things put a person on the "autistic" side of the spectrum, then welcome to the club. Did you not say that you had several ex-wives? Could this not be due to a problem relating to other people? [:'(]

Actually no SOM because I dislike all people equally. ;) I'm actually the life of the party, born Gemini I can draw the attention of a crowd at just about any event. I'm hardly anti-social (when I don't want to be) and even when I choose to be I never really am. ;) I am a leader, yet, I do not wish to be, but, I am not a follower and will always seek my own path to the same end when I can. ;) Austistic? me? Hardly. ;) I'm just a self made being just waiting on my own destinys choo choo train to the next level of existance. ;)

Yes, I am. But I tend to think that you are correct in your observation about board vs. comp gaming. Of course the authors of the article do not make the distinction between the two and in particular they probably overgeneralize comp gaming into the console games or FPS pc games.

There certainly are poor souls in our profession who would by common consensus be on the "outer limits" of "normal" personality types. You have to wonder somewhat about the nature or nuture aspect of the job and the personality type.

Unfortunately for me, there is noone who I can talk games with at work, actually there is one but he is strangely weaned off games by his evil shrew of a wife. He claims to have an attic full of unpunched AH classics that his wife wants to destroy. I keep asking him to take a quick inventory and I told him I'd buy them from him but he's sentimental about them it seems. Too bad.

Deserves it's own thread. I had this record album of his, very funny. He was talking about Doritos and the neighbors. And the dog who's embarassing tendency towards 'selective bathing' of his genitals always seems to happen right in front of everyone. Hahahaha ! What a riot that album was.

Ah, so you are just a megalomaniac? [;)]

As a side note, I love George Carlin, I once saw him at the Indiana University auditorium. One of the best shows in my life. Said some priceless things about cell phones, defense spending, and the education system.

At one point he sort of ceased being funny for a while, because all of the things he was saying made so much sense. Scary...

A psychologist is someone who one day asked themselves "I wonder if they will PAY me to tell them what "I" think other people think? And a psychiatrist is someone who one day asked themselves "I wonder if they will PAY me to tell them what "I" think is wrong with them? Apparently they both had great ideas as there are idiots born every minute and most of them live. ;) I don't know why more people don't become psychologists and psychiatrists as they are two of the easiest jobs out there next to a hotdog vendor. ;)

Rav,

I as a person with Huntington's Disease I absolutely must see a psychiatrist or I'll go really wild. I see a Psych and a Neurologist and that get's me through my days.

I used to think like you do about Psych's but I have had a startling about face.

Regards,

Grell
