Does anyone know what the carrier upgrades are and when they occur? I was considering sending back one or two for refits, as I am not going to be seeking a carrier battle any time soon.

I think most ship upgrades are enhanced AAA.

Some might get radar added, not sure as I never paid much attention to that.
The upgraded AA is done during the game without going back to PH for the Allies. I've noticed this when I base DDs at Noumea and it's a 9 harbor.

I found a thread that talked about carrier upgrades and it got me a little concerned. Over two upgrades the Lexington came back with less AA value then it started.
Also, does anyone know if the date matters at all or how many trips a ship makes back? Anyone know what ships are eligable for refits? I know some allied ships start out sub-par, but do the ships coming later need to be sent back at all? Or is it just carriers that need refits?
As far as Allied ships getting upgraded at Noumea, I am almost positive that shouldn't happen. I know that size 5 ports can repair broken systems (guns, radar etc.) but wide spread upgrades (1.1AA to 40mm) have to happen at pearl.

Hrm, when weapon mounts are destroyed are they not reparied when they are at pearl? I had 2 50 cal mounts on the Yorktown hit, and the radar destroyed. Radar repaired in Noumea, but the 50 cals never did. Sent back to Pearl, just got it back. The AA was upgraded, but came back minus 2 mounts. Its red exactly as it was prior to the trip to Pearl, just now its 20mm AA instead of 50 cals.

They were fixed. Look at the sys damage, if it's 0 there is no damage to any of the ship's systems. It's a bug.

I don't think it's a bug. The ship came back minus two AA mounts but the .5 cal's were replaced by 20mm's. Thats an upgrade.
The # of the AA mounts can go down at an upgrade.
Per US Navy Aircraft Carriers 1922-45 ( Osprey Publishing ), guns of all sizes & types ( inc. 5" ) were removed at upgrades to enable the addition of : larger/heavier AA mounts, flight deck catapults, flight deck strengthening and radar. The major problem of any upgrade, especially flight deck strengthening or other armour increases was weight. To compensate, AA ( or other gun mounts ) were removed. Weight was a major factor due to the need to balance the weight of the ship on the port/starboard sides ( AC's being top heavy).

I think tocaff is right. The ship has mirrored mounts, so if 8 were on one side, I'd expect 8 to be on the other. Currently its 8x20mm and 10x20mm.

Yorktown class. Might be the York actually.

By 6/42 Hornet & Yorktown had 24 20mm guns each ( in lieu of .5 cal ).
Enterprise had 32. In 8/42 revised to 38 on Enterprise & 32 on Hornet. 11/42 revised total of 46 for Enterprise. All 20mm guns were single mounts prior to a major refit at 7/43.
NB: As the AA mounts are way lighter than the 5" gun mounts, balance per side was less of an issue. However, the UV editor indeed shows the AA guns as "mirrored", so the upgrade (.5 cal to 20mm ) has been done and the two damaged guns appear not to have been replaced, so it looks like it's a bug I guess! Sorry Tocaff!

Check out the caliber of the AA guns on each vessel. Better calibers equals better AA ratings. Also, re the 5" guns, each ship may have a different TYPE, the later type ( 38, Mk 12 ) providing a better AA value.

I had 3 carriers that were in a battle that sustained damage and got systems knocked out. I put JUST the ships at port (3) at a size 9 port after what wasn't repaired when sent back to PH. One JUST got back to 0 sys dmg after months in port, and the guns that were knocked out still aren't repaired. Will they never get repaired?

Again, this is a bug. If a ship shows 0 sys damage but say a 40mm mount is shown as damaged, it isn't. 0 means exactly that, zero. There was a similar thread in the WITP forum about this. Remember that WITP and WPO share the same engine as UV (the grand daddy). I've had it happen to me on numerous occassions too.

Re repair "bug"; some thoughts, after checking the rules & patch notes.
The UV patch notes ( under version 2.422 ) state :-
"Ships with specific device damage did not have that damage immediately repaired, when ships were sent off map for repairs or upgrades. Fixed."
Maybe this was NOT fixed for ON map ports, ( and/or a further req'd fix was missed re off map ports )!
NB :- Per rules ( 11.5 section 4 ) " These systems may be repaired if at anchor in a port with a current size of at least 5." Note the use of the word MAY, suggusting it is not guaranteed.
NBB :- Per the header to 11.5 :- "Ships can sustain 5 types of damage," type 1 is listed as "System Damage", type 4 is listed as "Individual weapon systems." Therefore, I don't think it is safe to assume that because System Damage ( Sys ) is Zero, that the AI has "completed" the
repair to the Individual weapon system damage. IF I am correct, leaving the ship in port ( on map ) for a further period of time MAY get the repair done.
NBBB :- Maybe ( re the MAY ), due to the length of time that a repair will take, the AI decides that it is better to return an off map ship without completing the repair.

Ah I figured that if it was a bug maybe it would correctly calculate the AA ratings.
As for before the patch, this is my first game in a long time (2003?). Patched with latest when I started back up. Unfortunatley had it happen both on and off map.
