Your antivirus program has mistakenly identified witprec.exe as a virus. It probably has renamed it and now you get a 999 error because the program can not be found. You will need to update your AV program or use a different one and reinstall WitP.

The latest virus update probably has a pattern in it that causes a false positive with witprec.exe.  If you're using a popular virus scanner, I wouldn't be surprised if more people don't run into the same problem soon.

Yep - as wdolson has noted, it's the updates that are getting you... there are (i think) the 3 "incidents" of antiviral, or antimalware programs doing in the game - AVG (fixed by the company immediately), some antimalware program, and PC-cillin (i think that it the name).

Only solution i can offer for the latter two is to get a different antiviral program (AVG-free is safe now), remove the old one.

You MIGHT need to reinstall WITP - but the PC-cillin problem was solved just by removing the antivirus program. The AVG problem (once the program was fixed) was solved by getting a copy of the "sanitized" file (i.e. - from another player) and copying it into the appropriate directory.

Can i ask WHAT antiviral program did this to you?

EDIT: Is micro-trend the PC-cillin antiviral program?

REDIT: Did a search - yes, it is the same program, so it is a repeat problem. The prior person affected by this just got a new antiviral program, removed PC-cillin, and did NOT have to reinstall.

as this is my backup machine I can live without it for a little bit. Having paid money for this program (which does a good job most of the time) I am loath to ditch it but it seems to work ok if i turn off the AV program during install (while I am offline of course) so I am doing that to reinstall. If it happens again i will go with AVG

Thanks for the quick answers[&o]

If you still have PC-Cillin, it will declare it is a virus again... right now (assuming PC-Cillin is behaving like it was last week) - there is no reason to reinstall WITP...

See if you can turn off PC-Cillin (use CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up Task Manager if there is no easy way to do this). Then try running WITP.

If the file witprec.exe has been deleted or moved, you can move it back or get a replacement, but as of last week PC-Cillin was just blocking its execution, so WITP was intact (but not able to be run while PC-Cillin is active).

BTW - if turning off the program works, you can always just turn the PC-Cillin off and run WITP when offline.
