So I need to send a letter or email to Microsoft saying that I'd switch over to Ubuntu before I'd buy a Vista system in order to prevent them from discontinuing XP? No one has complained? I think they are full of something. [;)]

I didn't know that most people had a choice to have either Vista or XP loaded upon purchasing a computer at Best Buy, Circuit City, or other big box stores.

That is news.

Their proof will be the number of downloads for Win XP SP3...

I tell you, if there are security issues SP3 corrects and someone suffers damages by Microsoft delaying it in favor of Vista, there will be one hell of a class action.

Why are they holding it up? [:-][:-][:-]

Hi Sabre,

Actually, a search of the MS site confirms we still have to wait a little bit longer:

"Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer."

All MS officially gives us right now is this:

The REAL news is that building your own box is both cheaper and more cost efficient!

If you can make a 'peanut butter sandwitch' without messing up, you can build your own computer. Not even close to 'rocket science'...more akin to cook-book reciepes, eh?

Also allows one to use any 'purchased' OS over and over again.

Read up on this, it's really easy! I've been doing it for the last decade ( from windoze 98 onward) and all I can say is "Why Buy, When you can Roll your Own" eh?

I have blown up an electric can opener. I'm lucky my wife lets me own a computer. Its a wonder I haven't blown the house up yet. All surrounding wall sockets on the other hand......

edit: maybe I need to get a new surge protector. I've only had mine since '93

Actually, not really, all one needed to do is ask,
however the present option is only for those getting the high end vista
versions, and you still pay for the vista license,
so basically you pay for vista, and they downgrade your os to XP.

XP will be around still for a good while, Dos, Win9x are still around too, Mickysofts simply at a point not supporting XP meaning no fixes...

Uh, I'm pretty sure my computer is jampacked with solid rocket fuel waiting for take off.

Or maybe that's dust. Something smells burnt either way.
